Virgil van Dijk has admitted that it still feels “surreal” for Liverpool’s players to continue with their routines after the tragic passing of Diogo Jota, but he also assured that the squad is more united than ever in their mission to honour their teammate’s legacy.

Jota died last month alongside his brother André Silva in a car accident while travelling back to Liverpool for pre-season. After recovering from lung surgery, he was unable to fly, which is why he was returning by road to reach a ferry port. The vehicle reportedly veered off the road due to a burst tire and caught fire.

“His family comes first”

In an interview with Liverpoolfc.com, Van Dijk was clear: “First and foremost are Rute and the kids, and the entire family of Diogo and André. We can’t imagine their pain. It’s surreal, but as a team we’re trying to cope in the best way we can. The club has been incredibly supportive.”

The captain also admitted it has been “strange” trying to return to football as if nothing happened. “We will never forget Diogo. We try to honour him every day, in every match. Not just now, but for as long as we can, because that’s what he deserves,” he added.

A void that can’t be filled

Diogo Jota joined Liverpool in 2020 and played 131 matches, winning one Premier League title, an FA Cup, and two League Cups. His impact was felt deeply, both on and off the pitch. “We’ll remember him at every stadium we go to,” said Van Dijk. “So today, let’s enjoy the game—but above all, let’s do it for him.”
