Tottenham on the Verge of Joining the List of Relegated Giants
The Tottenham are fighting for survival in these final weeks in what could be some of the most important matches in their recent history. The Spurs have not been relegated since the 1976/77 season, and if it happens, it would be a catastrophic blow for one of England’s historic clubs.
The team has six matches left to collect the points needed to escape the relegation zone. They currently sit in 18th place in the Premier League, just two points behind West Ham. However, what is truly alarming is their form: they have not managed to win a single game this year.
They are on a 14-match winless streak in the league, earning only five points in that span. This run has dragged them into a deep crisis, leaving them on the brink of disaster.
Giants That Have Already Fallen
If relegation becomes a reality, Tottenham would join a long list of major clubs that have dropped to the second tier across different leagues around the world.
One of the most memorable cases is Atlético de Madrid, which was relegated in 2000 after a very poor season, sealing their fate on the final matchday against Oviedo. Two years later, they returned to LaLiga, where they have remained ever since.
In Italy, Napoli suffered relegation due to financial problems that even sent them down to the fourth division. Another notable case is Juventus, which was relegated following the Calciopoli scandal and sent to Serie B.
In Germany, Hamburgo, a European champion and historic Bundesliga club, was relegated in 2018, losing its status as a team that had never gone down. It wasn’t until last season that they managed to return to the top flight.

In Argentina, River Plate experienced one of the most shocking relegations in world football in 2011, following a disastrous campaign and a dramatic playoff against Belgrano. The club returned to the top division just one year later.
Brazil has not been immune to this phenomenon either. Santos was relegated in 2023, although they quickly returned to the Brasileirao. Other giants have also suffered drops: Vasco da Gama has been relegated four times, Botafogo and Gremio three times, Fluminense and Palmeiras twice, and Corinthians once.
In England, Tottenham could join cases like Leeds United, which was relegated in 2004 and did not return to the Premier League until 2020 under the management of Marcelo Bielsa.
Six Finals to Survive
There is still room to avoid it. Tottenham has six matches left to change its fate and avoid going down in history as another fallen giant. Everything will depend on what they do in this final stretch.
