Tottenham confirmed on Monday the record signing of Sandro Tonali in a deal that could reach 100 million pounds and marks a before-and-after in the club's history. The Italian midfielder arrives from Newcastle United and becomes the centerpiece of an ambitious project that seeks to leave behind the suffering of the last season, when the Spurs barely avoided relegation with a last-minute victory against Everton on the final day.

Tonali joins a revamped midfield that already includes Mateus Fernandes, signed for 85 million pounds from West Ham, thus forming a 185 million-pound duo that reflects the magnitude of the gamble. Additionally, the club signed Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for 50 million, while Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Martin Dubravka arrived as free agents, marking the start of a frantic transfer market.

Tonali himself expressed his enthusiasm for the challenge: "I am very happy to be here. When I arrived at the club, I felt something special. There were talks about four or five interested teams, but for me, there was only one. I spoke with the coach for two hours about the club, the fans, the stadium, and our football, and it was magical. I knew immediately that I had to sign with Tottenham."

The 26-year-old midfielder played 110 matches with Newcastle, where he was key in winning the 2024-25 League Cup against Liverpool, breaking a 70-year drought without domestic titles. In the last Premier League, he played 35 matches, with 1,319 successful passes and 32 chances created, being surpassed only by Bruno Guimarães in playmaking.
