The only options for the Chelsea dugout
Following the departure of Liam Rosenior from Chelsea, the search for a new head coach for next season has already begun. The main candidates are Cesc Fàbregas, current manager of Como, and Andoni Iraola, head coach of Bournemouth.
Both managers are highly regarded within the club’s board, which has acknowledged that it is in a reflection process to make the right long-term decision. Chelsea’s season has not been positive, and the team now risks missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification.
Cesc Fàbregas, the emerging project with high potential
Fàbregas is highly rated for the work he has done at Como. With a young and dynamic squad, he achieved promotion and has established the team in Serie A, with the possibility of fighting for European spots next season.
His tactical versatility is also attractive. The Spaniard has worked under coaches such as Pep Guardiola, Arsène Wenger, José Mourinho, and Antonio Conte, absorbing ideas from each of them. This is reflected in teams capable of dominating possession or sitting back and counterattacking depending on the match context.
However, his lack of experience in a high-demand managerial environment could work against him. The Premier League is an extremely competitive competition, and managing a club of Chelsea’s size brings constant pressure.
Andoni Iraola, the more established option in England
This is where Iraola comes in. Since 2023, he has been managing Bournemouth, a team currently fighting for European places and, interestingly, competing with Chelsea for a Conference League spot.
The Basque coach stands out for his ability to transform modest projects. He already did so with Rayo Vallecano, and he is now repeating the same story with Bournemouth, taking them from the relegation zone to becoming a European contender.
In addition, he already knows the Premier League, which means his adaptation would be immediate. However, all his experience has come at clubs with lower media and sporting pressure. The expectations at Chelsea are different, and making the leap to an environment where winning titles is the demand could be a major challenge.

Financial factor and final decision
The financial factor also plays a key role. Iraola has announced that he will leave Bournemouth at the end of the season and would arrive as a free agent. Fàbregas, on the other hand, is still under contract with Como, meaning Chelsea would have to pay a release clause to sign him.
This is something the club no longer wants to repeat. In recent years, Chelsea has spent more than £45 million in compensation for dismissed managers. In addition, the club reported losses of £262 million. In that context, avoiding new expenses could bring Iraola closer to Stamford Bridge. Furthermore, failing to qualify for the Champions League would also mean higher losses and a reduced budget, making it harder to invest heavily in a new coach.
