The Incredible Assist Record That Bruno Fernandes Is About to Break In the Premier League
The Portuguese Manchester United player is emerging as one of the best assist providers in the Premier League and could break a record this season.
A perfect moment for Fernandes
Bruno Fernandes is experiencing a stellar run and is nearing a historic milestone in the Premier League. On Monday, the Manchester United captain notched his nineteenth (19th) assist of the season in a 2-1 win over Brentford, leaving him just one assist short of the record shared by Thierry Henry in 2002-2003 with Arsenal and Kevin de Bruyne in the 2019-2020 season with Manchester City, both with twenty assists.
A record to break with a tremendous present
The Portuguese player, currently regarded as the league's top assist maker and just one assist away from breaking the record, has provided assists in six of his last seven games. Against Brentford, he was once again decisive, officially providing the assist for the 2-0 goal and making a significant contribution to the 2-0 result. He also played a key role in the play leading to the first goal. His corner to the far post was long and was met by Harry Maguire, and Casemiro, who ran unmarked and scored his ninth goal of the season, the highest scoring record in his career, surpassing the six he had scored for Real Madrid during the 2020–2021 season.
The game was not easy for United. After taking the lead, Brentford created several clear chances that could have led to a draw, including a possible handball by Ayden Heavey that the referee dismissed and ruled out. However, in a decisive counterattack, Fernandes once again demonstrated his exceptional vision. He covered twenty yards with the ball and, with two passing options, chose to pass to Benjamin Sesko. With a subtle feint, the Slovenian dribbled past Nathan Collins and finished with his right foot to seal the win, a testament to the Portuguese player's direct assist and contribution to the victory.
Fernandes' future with this record to break
With four matchdays to go, Fernandes has the opportunity to etch his name into Premier League history. His consistency and precision have brought him to the threshold of a record that once seemed unattainable. At Old Trafford, they know that the Portuguese player's leadership could be key to ending the season with an achievement that goes beyond the immediate results.
