The End of an Era at Liverpool
With the departure of Andy Robertson, one of the most iconic modern legends of Anfield, the end of a cycle at Liverpool is now confirmed. From the starting XI that conquered Europe in 2019, only two key figures remain, opening the door to a major squad rebuild.
Today, only Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker remain at the club. This same season, Mohamed Salah announced his departure after nine years in Merseyside, and the last to say goodbye will be Robertson, who also closes a nine-year spell with the Reds.
The end of a golden cycle at Liverpool
If we revisit that European champion defense, the transformation is total: Trent Alexander-Arnold now plays for Real Madrid, Joel Matip ended his professional career after announcing his retirement in October 2024, Van Dijk continues as the defensive leader, and Robertson will leave at the end of the season.
In midfield, the transformation is just as dramatic. Jordan Henderson left the club in 2023, had spells in Saudi Arabia and with Ajax, and is now at Brentford. Fabinho also moved to Saudi Arabia, where he currently plays for Al Ittihad. Georginio Wijnaldum left in 2020 to join PSG, later had an unconvincing spell at Roma, and is now part of Al-Ettifaq.
The farewell of the historic trio
The attack is perhaps where the change hurts most for supporters. That iconic trio that dominated Europe has almost completely disappeared. Roberto Firmino left in 2023 for Al-Ahli and later continued his career in Qatar with Al-Sadd. Sadio Mané made one of the most emotional departures, joining Bayern Munich, where he won the Bundesliga before moving to Al-Nassr. And now, with Salah set to leave at the end of the season, that golden era comes to a definitive close.

A new project on the horizon
Liverpool are already working on a full rebuild. Added to this is the uncertainty in the dugout: the possible departure of Arne Slot, who replaced Jürgen Klopp, could open the door for Xabi Alonso, with the idea of starting a completely new project from scratch.
The Reds aim to rise again in Europe and reclaim dominance in England. The rebuild has been profound, and almost no traces remain of the team that once ruled Europe. In Merseyside, a new era is about to begin.
