The soccer world continues to be shocked after the tragic death of Liverpool striker Diogo Jota, 28, and his brother André Días, 25, who were killed in a traffic accident in the early hours of Wednesday and Thursday morning in the province of Zamora, Spain.
The wake for both brothers has begun in Gondomar, Portugal, where family, friends, teammates, and fans are paying tribute. Jota played for Liverpool, while André was a player for FC Penafiel.
Henderson couldn’t hold back the tears
One of the most emotional moments came at Anfield, where Jordan Henderson, former Liverpool captain and current Ajax midfielder, arrived to lay flowers in memory of his former teammate and his brother. Visibly moved, Henderson paid tribute to someone who had been a key figure during his time with the Reds.
The entrance of Anfield is now filled with flowers, shirts, scarves, candles, and heartfelt messages. The club and its supporters have shown immense affection and respect for Diogo and André, a gesture that has resonated around the world.
Liverpool delays preseason return
Liverpool had been scheduled to begin preseason physical tests this Friday in preparation for the 2025-26 campaign. However, in the wake of the tragedy, the club decided to postpone the return to training out of respect and mourning.
Why they were traveling by road
Diogo Jota and his brother were en route to England to report back for preseason training when the fatal accident occurred. They were heading to Santander to catch a ferry to Portsmouth, as doctors had advised Jota not to fly due to a recent surgical procedure.
A heartbreaking loss
The loss of Diogo Jota is a devastating blow to the football community. Beyond his talent and determination on the pitch, the Portuguese forward embodied perseverance and hard work a true symbol that dreams can be achieved through effort.
Rest in peace, Diogo. Rest in peace, André. Football will never forget you.
