Slot sacked by Liverpool after underwhelming second season
Liverpool have made the decision to sack Arne Slot after a difficult campaign in 2025-26, with Andoni Iraola the favourite to replace him.
Liverpool have confirmed they have parted ways with Arne Slot after the Dutchman endured a difficult second season at Anfield in 2025-26.
Slot, who succeeded Jurgen Klopp in 2024, guided the Reds to the Premier League title in his first campaign in charge, but finished 25 points behind champions Arsenal this year.
But Slot did help Liverpool qualify for the Champions League with a fifth-placed finish. However, that has proved to not be enough for the 47-year-old to retain his position.
During his time on Merseyside, Slot oversaw 113 matches in all competitions, winning 66 of those (D18 L29), averaging 1.91 points per game with a win percentage of 58.4%.
Reports have suggested that Andoni Iraola, who led Bournemouth to the Europa League this season, is among the favourites to replace Slot in the Anfield dugout.
"Liverpool FC can confirm Arne Slot is to depart his role as head coach with immediate effect and that the process to appoint a successor is under way," a statement read.
"He leaves with a Premier League title to his name and our deepest gratitude and appreciation."
Slot enjoyed a successful first campaign at Liverpool, becoming only the fifth manager to win the Premier League in their first season, and the first since Antonio Conte when he won the top-flight title with Chelsea in 2016-17.
And the Reds were expected to challenge again at the top after breaking the British transfer fee record by signing Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.
Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong were some of the other high-profile names to join the club, but Liverpool's summer signings failed to deliver.
Despite starting their Premier League title defence with five wins out of five, Liverpool suffered a downturn in results and performances, with many supporters criticising the style of play implemented by Slot.
The Reds were dumped out of the EFL Cup by Crystal Palace before losing convincingly to Manchester City in the FA Cup, with Paris Saint-Germain emerging 4-0 victors on aggregate in their Champions League quarter-final clash.
Slot was able to salvage a spot in UEFA's flagship competition, but Liverpool's 60 points is the lowest by a side to finish fifth or higher in the Premier League since Tottenham in 2006-07 (also fifth with 60).
Liverpool also lost 19 games across all competitions in 2025-26. Since they were last promoted to the top-flight in 1962, only in 1992-93 (20) had they suffered more defeats in a campaign (also 19 in 2004-05 and 2009-10).
