Sancho's Old Trafford Failure Ends
Manchester United's costly gamble on Jadon Sancho has officially come to an end, with the English winger departing as a free agent after an underwhelming five-year spell.
Jadon Sancho has officially brought his Manchester United chapter to a close, ending one of the most disappointing transfers in the club's modern history. Signed from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for €85 million, the winger leaves Old Trafford as a free agent after failing to justify the enormous expectations surrounding his arrival.
Sancho arrived in Manchester as one of England's brightest young stars. Between 2018 and 2021, he produced outstanding numbers in Germany, scoring 49 goals and providing 53 assists. Yet that form never translated to the Premier League.
During his time with Manchester United, Sancho made just 83 appearances, contributed to 18 goals and helped the club win the 2023 Carabao Cup. His spell was also overshadowed by disciplinary issues that led to his temporary exclusion from the first-team squad in 2023.
Ironically, his performances improved away from Old Trafford. He reached the UEFA Champions League final with Borussia Dortmund in 2024, won the UEFA Conference League with Chelsea FC in 2025 and lifted the UEFA Europa League with Aston Villa FC in 2026.
At 26 years old, Sancho still has time to revive his career. A return to Borussia Dortmund remains a possibility, while several European clubs continue monitoring a player whose ability is undeniable but whose career is still searching for the consistency once expected of a future superstar.
