Daniel Levy described the choice to sack Ange Postecoglou as “emotionally difficult” but is backing “highly intelligent” Thomas Frank to continue Tottenham Hotspur's success.

Spurs won the Europa League under Postecoglou last month, ending a 17-year trophy drought by beating Manchester United 1-0, but it was not enough for the Australian coach to keep his job after they finished 17th in the Premier League.

Postecoglou oversaw 22 league defeats in 2024-25, which is the most losses a team has suffered in the competition without going down.

Chairman Levy and new chief executive Vinai Venkatesham proceeded to replace Postecoglou with Frank, after his success at Brentford.

Levy said the collective decision to replace Postecoglou was a necessary change to build on their European title.

“I’m very grateful to Ange,” Levy told Spurs' YouTube channel.

“I do not regret appointing Ange. In his first season we finished fifth and in the second season we were over the moon to win a trophy but we need to compete in all competitions.

“We felt that we needed a change.

“I have got an excellent relationship with him and told him he will always be a part of our history. Himself and his family are always welcome back.

“It was a collective decision. It was not my decision. We do everything together. Emotionally it was difficult but we believe we have the right decision for the club.”

Levy and Venkatesham said Frank emerged as their first-choice option from 30 candidates, specifically praising the Dane's record of developing young players.

“Whenever you have a new coach it is always a fresh start,” Levy added.

“You have different ideas. We want to build on the success of winning a trophy last season.

“One of the things that stood out to me with Thomas – clearly highly intelligent, great communicator, super human being plus all of the other aspects that are important.”
