Robertson completes Tottenham move after Liverpool exit
After narrowly avoiding Premier League relegation, Tottenham have bolstered their defence with the signing of Andy Robertson.
Tottenham have completed the signing of experienced full-back Andy Robertson following the Scotland international's departure from Liverpool at the end of last season.
Robertson, who enjoyed a trophy-laden nine-year stint on Merseyside, will link up with his new club following the World Cup, where he is captaining Scotland.
The 32-year-old had been linked with a move to Spurs in January after losing his place to Milos Kerkez, but will now join Roberto De Zerbi's side on a free transfer.
Robertson joined Liverpool from Hull City in 2017 for £8m and would go on to become a key part of the Reds' success under both Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot.
He made 378 appearances for the club in all competitions, picking up nine major honours along the way, which includes two Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2018-19, when he helped Liverpool beat his new team in the final.
Since making his Premier League debut in August 2017, only former team-mate Trent Alexander-Arnold (64) registered more assists in the top flight than Robertson's 56 among defenders to have played in the competition in that time.
Robertson is De Zerbi's first signing since becoming Spurs' new boss, and he believes his experience will prove pivotal in the group after a dismal 2025-26 campaign.
"Andy is someone I've admired for a number of years, and he will bring outstanding technical qualities, experience, leadership and mentality to our team," De Zerbi said.
"He is a proven winner at the highest level over a long period and is someone who can be a big player for us, both on and off the pitch.
"I can't wait to start working with him and see the positive impact he will have on everyone around him."
Robertson joins a Spurs side that retained their Premier League status on the final day after beating Everton 1-0 thanks to Joao Palhinha's 43rd-minute winner.
He will be aiming to improve Spurs' defence, with only Burnley (75), Wolves (68) and West Ham (65) conceding more Premier League goals last season than Tottenham (57).
"We are delighted to welcome Andy to the club," said Spurs sporting director Johan Lange.
"First and foremost, he is an outstanding left-back – one of the best of all time in the Premier League, and someone who will improve our squad.
"In addition, his quality, character and leadership have been evident throughout a career in which he has regularly competed for and won major honours.
"Andy's professionalism and commitment will also be invaluable to the development of our squad, and he shares our ambition and determination to bring success back to the club.
"We are excited about Andy's new chapter with us and look forward to having him here after the World Cup."
Spurs are also interested in signing Brighton's Jan Paul van Hecke, with reports suggesting the Seagulls have already rejected an initial bid for the Dutch defender.
Van Hecke made his name during De Zerbi's time at Brighton, and is reportedly valued at around £70m.
