Problem for Guardiola and Manchester City: Claudio Echeverri Wants to Return to River Plate
- Without minutes in Germany, Claudio “Diablito” Echeverri has made his feelings clear — he wants to return to River Plate, but Manchester City have no intention of letting him leave Europe.
A Talent Running Out of Patience
Claudio Echeverri (19) is going through a tough spell during his loan at Bayer Leverkusen. The Argentine prodigy, signed by Manchester City in January 2024 and sent to Germany to gain experience, has barely featured this season.
According to TyC Sports, Echeverri has already asked to return to River Plate, the club where he grew up and made a name for himself before moving to Europe.
City view him as a long-term investment, but his progress has stalled. Under Xabi Alonso, Echeverri has played only six games, and in the last five — including the recent German Cup win over Paderborn — he hasn’t left the bench once.
A Post That Says It All
The situation escalated after a social media post in which Echeverri shared a photo kissing the River Plate badge, alongside a heart and hourglass emoji.
Fans immediately interpreted it as a message of longing — the “Diablito” wants to go home.
Sources in Argentina claim the player’s camp has already contacted Manchester City to request a return, but such a move appears highly unlikely due to contractual and sporting reasons.

Guardiola’s New Headache
In Manchester, the idea of Echeverri returning to South America isn’t part of the plan. The Manchester City hierarchy believe playing in Europe is essential for his development and are considering alternative loan options where he can gain minutes and experience.
Echeverri, however, is growing restless. He wants playing time and trust — two things he hasn’t found at Leverkusen.
The situation is now a potential headache for Pep Guardiola, who must balance the player’s growth, his happiness, and the club’s long-term vision.
A promising talent is losing patience, and City might soon have to decide whether to insist on their plan or let the “Diablito” follow his heart back home.
