Newcastle Beats Real Madrid and Chelsea to the Signing of Ewen Jaouen
Newcastle United continues to invest in young talent and, according to reports from Canal+, has secured the signing of French goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen. The 20-year-old shot-stopper is set to sign a four-year contract with the Magpies, winning the race for one of Europe’s most promising young goalkeepers.
A Transfer Battle Won Against Two European Giants
Jaouen, who currently belongs to Stade de Reims, had attracted interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs. Among the teams closely monitoring his development were Real Madrid and Chelsea. The Spanish giants viewed him as a long-term option to begin preparing for life after Thibaut Courtois, while the London club had also shown strong interest in bringing him to Stamford Bridge.
However, it was Newcastle that ultimately convinced the player and completed the deal.
The English club’s strategy is clear: sign a goalkeeper with enormous potential and develop him within its long-term sporting project. While he is not expected to become an immediate starter in the Premier League, the plan is for him to compete at the highest level and eventually establish himself as the future No. 1 under Eddie Howe.

A Goalkeeper Built for the Future
Jaouen’s performances in France explain why he generated so much interest among elite clubs. The goalkeeper made 34 appearances and recorded 15 clean sheets, numbers that placed him among the top performers in Ligue 2. In addition, his imposing physical presence—standing close to two meters tall—allows him to dominate aerial situations and cover a large portion of the goal, a trait highly valued in English football.
Jaouen is known for his composure under pressure, strong reflexes in one-on-one situations, and an impressive ability to organize the defensive line despite his young age. He has also represented France at youth international level, further highlighting the confidence that exists in his potential.
Although he has yet to make his debut in the top tier of French football, Newcastle believes he possesses all the qualities necessary to make the jump. It is a significant investment and a long-term project, but the club is convinced it has secured one of the most promising goalkeepers in European football.
