Mikel Arteta Brushes off Criticism of His Arsenal for Their Defensive Style
The criticism of Arsenal's defensive style does not affect him; he transforms it into energy to continue innovating and competing at the highest level.
In champion mode, and its relationship with criticism
Mikel Arteta is living days of fulfillment and satisfaction at Arsenal. After winning the Premier League and reaching the Champions League final, the Basque coach is facing a debate that has been following him for months: his team's defensive style. The criticism, however, seems to slide off him.
"I respect all opinions, but I am the one who decides whether to give them importance, discard them, or use them as learning," he explained in a dialog with the press that interviewed him in his office. For Arteta, listening is part of the job, although he insists that one cannot live constantly concerned with what others say. His focus is on constant innovation: "If a formula is not enough to win, my obligation is to change it and keep looking for other ways."
The Premier League of Arsenal
The path to the English title was marked by injuries. According to the coach himself, if the chances of success had been calculated by a machine, they would have barely reached 2%. "I wasn't going to settle for that," he confessed. Given that scenario, Arsenal had to adapt, close ranks, and bet on defensive solidity. A strategy that generated questions, but which proved crucial to maintaining competitiveness in more than 60 high-stakes matches.
Arteta acknowledges that there were moments of personal vulnerability when he doubted his ability to lead. However, the collective work and the conviction of his players led him to overcome those doubts. "We did it together," he emphasized.

Arteta's future
Today, with the Premier League in the bag and the Champions League on the horizon, the coach insists that success is not a final destination, but a starting point. The criticism, far from being an obstacle, transforms into fuel: "We must use it as a tsunami of emotion, of illusion, and of hunger to win."
Thus, Arteta remains immune to external criticisms. His Arsenal, debated by some, has left behind the label of "losing team" and is preparing to write a new golden page in the club's history.
