Michael Carrick on the Hot Seat After Manchester United’s Poor Start

The former midfielder took charge of the team last season, recorded 12 wins in 17 matches, finished third in the Premier League and guided the Red Devils back to the Champions League. The club responded by giving him continuity and putting its faith in him to lead the new project.

The situation has changed quickly.

Manchester United has managed just one victory through four Premier League matches, has already lost to Hull City and Manchester City, and has now been eliminated from the Carabao Cup after a difficult night to explain at Old Trafford.

Elimination Against Brighton Increases the Pressure

The 3-2 defeat against Brighton made Carrick’s situation even more complicated.

Manchester United appeared to have complete control of the tie after early goals from Shea Lacey and Mason Mount. With a 2-0 advantage and playing at home, everything pointed toward a comfortable night.

It turned out to be exactly the opposite.

Brighton responded before halftime through Charalampos Kostoulas and completed the comeback in the second half thanks to Pascal Gross and Maxim De Cuyper.

The defeat also produced a difficult statistic for United: it was the first time in 50 years that the team had lost at Old Trafford after taking a two-goal lead.

The reaction from the supporters did not go unnoticed either. The boos after the final whistle reflected frustration that had already been building following the results from the opening weeks of the season.

From Returning to the Champions League to Facing Pressure

The credit Carrick earned last season still exists, but it is beginning to disappear.

The manager received the club’s backing after transforming the team during his initial spell and securing qualification for the Champions League. However, the start of the new campaign has once again exposed problems that appeared to be on their way toward being resolved.

The defeat against Hull City at the beginning of the Premier League campaign raised the first alarms. Then came the setback in the derby against Manchester City, a match that ended 1-0 and left United with just four points from its opening four league games.

Now, elimination from the Carabao Cup has been added to the list.

That makes it three defeats in six official matches and, more importantly, a sense of vulnerability that is beginning to cause concern around Old Trafford.

Carrick Insists He Does Not Feel the Pressure

While criticism continues to grow, Carrick is maintaining a much calmer message.

Following the elimination against Brighton, the manager accepted responsibility for his team’s collapse and made it clear that the noise surrounding his future does not change the way he works.

“I don’t feel under pressure,” Carrick said when asked about his situation. The manager acknowledged that he understands everything happening around the club but insisted that he does not allow it to affect him.

Outside the club, however, the first voices are beginning to question how long the situation can continue.

Former striker Gabby Agbonlahor said on talkSPORT that the club could begin considering alternatives if results do not improve over the next few matches. For now, this is not a decision made by Manchester United, but rather a warning of how quickly the situation could change.

Fulham Presents Another Test for Carrick

The schedule does not offer much time to find a solution.

Manchester United will visit Fulham at Craven Cottage before the international break, needing a result that can restore some calm around the project.

Last season, Carrick found answers when the club desperately needed a change and ultimately guided it back to the Champions League.

Now he faces a different challenge.

He no longer has to convince Manchester United that he deserves an opportunity. He has to prove that the faith placed in him just a few months ago remains justified.
