Michael Carrick Confirmed as Permanent Manager of Manchester United Contract Until 2028 and Return to Champions League
The former midfielder took over as interim in January and transformed United with key victories, a strong bond with the squad, and a return to the European elite
Support for Carrick to continue
Manchester United officially confirmed this Friday the continuation of Michael Carrick as the permanent manager of the men's first team, after signing a contract that will extend until 2028. The former club player had taken over on an interim basis in January, following Rúben Amorim's departure, and quickly managed to set things right in the Premier League.
Carrick's arrival at United
Carrick debuted with a dream victory: 2-0 against the classic rival, Manchester City, and then strung together wins against Arsenal (3-2), Liverpool, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Tottenham. Although the results against lower-profile teams were not as decisive, the coach managed to take United from seventh to third place, securing qualification for the Champions League.
This is the second permanent challenge in his career as a coach, after having managed Middlesbrough in the Championship for three years.
The club's statement
In the official statement, the club expressed: "Manchester United is pleased to announce that Michael Carrick will continue as the head coach of the men's first team, after signing a new contract that will extend until 2028."
Carrick himself shared his excitement: "From the moment I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Taking on the responsibility of leading this special club fills me with immense pride. In these five months, this group of players has shown that they can meet the standards of resilience, unity, and determination that we demand. Now is the time to move forward together, with ambition and a clear purpose. Manchester United and our incredible fans deserve to fight for the biggest titles again."
For his part, the director of football, Jason Wilcox, justified the decision: "Michael has fully earned the opportunity to continue leading our team. Beyond the positive results, his approach is aligned with the club's values, traditions, and history. His achievement of bringing us back to the Champions League should not be underestimated. He has forged a strong bond with the players and can be proud of the winning culture we are building at Carrington and in the locker room."
