Liverpool Made Sure To Include Luis Díaz in a Tribute Video for Diogo Jota, but Fans Haven’t Forgotten He Missed the Funeral
Liverpool paid an emotional tribute to Diogo Jota, who tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain. The club released a heartfelt video in memory of the Portuguese striker, featuring several teammates visibly moved — including Luis Díaz, who appeared in multiple scenes, notably in one shot from behind that seemed to symbolize a farewell.
The club’s gesture and the controversy that lingers
The video has been interpreted by many as an effort by Liverpool to show Luis Díaz’s connection with Jota, following criticism directed at the Colombian for missing the funeral held in Portugal. Though visibly emotional in the footage, the controversy around his absence hasn’t faded.
The 28-year-old forward was in Colombia on vacation at the time. Reports noted his participation in a public event in Barranquilla with content creators, and he was seen supporting his brother Roger Díaz in a friendly influencer tournament. Meanwhile, in Gondomar, a large part of the Liverpool squad attended the funeral, including stars like Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Díaz, along with Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker, did not attend. While travel from South America may have been a challenge, fans were especially upset after images of Díaz smiling and taking photos at the event surfaced on social media.
A gesture that fans won’t forget
Many supporters recalled the powerful moment when Diogo Jota lifted a Luis Díaz jersey during a match at Anfield in 2023, showing solidarity while the Colombian’s father was being held hostage by the ELN. That gesture created a bond that, according to some, was not honored in return.
“He’s no longer in the hearts of Reds fans,” one supporter wrote on social media, echoing widespread disappointment over Díaz's absence.
Amid the tension, Liverpool officially announced it would retire Jota’s No. 20 shirt — a historic decision for the club and a rare move in Premier League history.
“We make him eternal. He will never be forgotten,” said Michael Edwards, CEO of Liverpool’s ownership group, as he confirmed the tribute. An unforgettable gesture — even as the debate over who showed up, and who didn’t, continues.
