Is Virgil van Dijk's Time at Liverpool Over After Ronald Araújo's Arrival?

The legendary Dutch defender could be entering his final chapter with the Premier League giants. Here are all the details.

Liverpool is already looking ahead to the future of its defense. The arrival of Ronald Araújo for the 2026-27 season provides another option at the back, but it also raises an inevitable question: who will eventually take Virgil van Dijk's place when his contract expires?

VAN DIJK ENTERS THE FINAL YEAR OF HIS CONTRACT

The Dutch captain is 35 years old and is entering the final season of his current deal with Liverpool. According to GOAL, a contract extension is not currently being considered, which would leave the defender as a free agent at the end of the 2026-27 campaign.

The challenge for the club will be finding a replacement for a player who has spent nine years at Anfield and played a key role in the team's Premier League and Champions League triumphs.

Van Dijk's age, however, does not mean the club has already decided who will take over his position. That is precisely where the Araújo dilemma comes into play.

ARAÚJO: FUTURE CENTER-BACK OR TEMPORARY SOLUTION?

The Uruguayan defender joined Liverpool on loan from FC Barcelona for the 2026-27 season. Despite being a center-back, he has been used at right-back because of Jeremie Frimpong's difficulties adapting to a more conventional defensive role.

At 27 years old, Araújo is far more accustomed to playing as a center-back in a back four.

His performances could become one of the factors shaping Liverpool's transfer plans for 2027. However, Danny Murphy has urged the club to keep its options open. Speaking exclusively to GOAL, the former Reds midfielder said Liverpool should assess Araújo “game by game, week by week,” while suggesting that his age means he should not automatically be viewed as Van Dijk's replacement.

Murphy also made it clear that Liverpool should continue monitoring the transfer market before making a definitive decision.

LIVERPOOL'S OTHER PROBLEM: THE FULL-BACKS

The defensive debate at Liverpool does not end with the center-back position. According to Danny Murphy, the full-back positions represent another issue for the team managed by Andoni Iraola.

The former player believes Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have yet to provide the level Liverpool needs, particularly when it comes to their contribution in possession. Murphy pointed out that much of Liverpool's recent success was built around full-backs capable of consistently creating danger in attack.

Frimpong's situation also has another layer. The Dutchman previously excelled in a more advanced role and as a wing-back, meaning his adaptation to a conventional right-back position represents a significant change.

As a result, Araújo's arrival could solve some immediate problems, but not necessarily all of them. Murphy believes Liverpool should reassess that area again, potentially as early as the January transfer window.

Van Dijk's future will undoubtedly be one of the biggest storylines heading into 2027. The Dutchman remains a defensive leader as he enters the final year of his contract, but Liverpool will eventually have to decide whether to build around Araújo, pursue another center-back in the transfer market, or combine both approaches.

With Jeremy Jacquet, Giovanni Leoni and Araújo among the defensive options available, Liverpool has pieces with which to plan for the next era. The major question is whether any of them can eventually fill the enormous void that Virgil van Dijk would leave at Anfield.
