Has He Surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo? Mohamed Salah Named Premier League Player of the Year 2024/25
The 2024/25 Premier League season left a historic mark on English football: Mohamed Salah was named Player of the Year by the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA). The Egyptian star, a key figure in Liverpool’s title-winning campaign, posted staggering numbers and broke barriers that put him above legends like Cristiano Ronaldo and Thierry Henry.
Salah, the driving force behind Liverpool’s title
The Egyptian international delivered his best campaign since joining Anfield in 2017. With 29 goals and 18 assists in 38 league games, the forward not only guided the Reds to their 20th English league championship — drawing level with Manchester United in titles — but also cemented his place as a club icon.
This accolade adds to two other individual honors Salah earned this season: the Premier League Player of the Season award and the Football Writers’ Association Player of the Year prize. With this third PFA recognition — after winning it in 2017/18 and 2021/22 — Salah becomes the first player in history to complete this hat-trick.
Beyond Cristiano Ronaldo and the Premier League legends
Mohamed Salah’s achievement puts him on a unique pedestal in English football. Until now, stars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Thierry Henry, Kevin De Bruyne, and Gareth Bale had lifted the award twice. The “Pharaoh” has now surpassed them, solidifying his legacy as part of the Premier League’s absolute elite.
In addition, the PFA also included several of his teammates in the Team of the Year, including Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, and Alexis Mac Allister, showcasing Liverpool’s collective dominance this season. The lineup also featured standouts from other clubs, such as William Saliba and Declan Rice from Arsenal, along with Alexander Isak from Newcastle.
The future of the “Pharaoh”
With a renewed contract and an unbreakable bond with the Liverpool faithful, Salah looks set to keep adding to his Premier League legacy. In a league that has showcased some of the greatest players of all time, the Egyptian has not only established himself as an Anfield idol but also as a figure whose name now sits alongside the game’s all-time greats.
The question now? If he has already surpassed Cristiano Ronaldo in individual honors, how far can Mohamed Salah’s legend go in the Premier League?
