Four Premier League Managers Who Are on the Hot Seat

  • The Premier League has yet to see its first managerial dismissal of the 2026–27 season, but four coaches are already under mounting pressure, with their next results potentially deciding their futures.

Who Will Be the First Premier League Manager to Get Fired?

The 2026–27 Premier League season has yet to produce its first managerial dismissal, but patience is already wearing thin at several clubs. After a campaign that saw 11 managers lose their jobs, poor results are once again putting coaches under pressure across England's top flight.

The contrast with last season is striking. By this stage of the 2025–26 campaign, two managers had already been dismissed. This time, every coach who started the season remains in charge, although some are facing increasingly difficult circumstances.

Four names stand out among those under pressure: Michael Carrick, Pierre Sage, Álvaro Arbeloa and Frank Lampard. Each took charge with different expectations, but all four desperately need results to ease concerns over their futures.

Michael Carrick: Manchester United Are Back in Crisis

Michael Carrick earned the trust of Manchester United following an impressive spell as interim manager that secured him the permanent job. However, his first full season has fallen well short of expectations. Defeats to Manchester City, Brighton, Atlético Madrid and Bournemouth have raised serious concerns, with a humiliating 3–0 home loss to Bournemouth reportedly prompting the club's hierarchy to evaluate potential replacements.

Carrick has also been let down by United's transfer strategy. While the club strengthened its midfield, major weaknesses in defense and attack remain, something Lisandro Martínez publicly criticized following the defeat to Atlético Madrid. Despite the disappointing results, some supporters continue to back Carrick, although frustration with the team's performances is growing.

Pierre Sage: Struggling to Maintain Crystal Palace's Success

Pierre Sage arrived at Crystal Palace facing the difficult task of replacing Oliver Glasner, who left after winning the FA Cup, Community Shield and Conference League. The Frenchman had enjoyed a successful spell with Lens, winning the Coupe de France and challenging PSG for the Ligue 1 title. However, his start in English football has been defined by disappointing results and defensive problems.

Palace managed just two victories in their first eight Premier League matches, conceding 19 goals, the second-worst defensive record in the division at that stage. Their Europa League commitments have placed further strain on a squad lacking depth, while reports of dressing-room tensions and disagreements between Sage and the board over summer recruitment have added to the pressure.

Álvaro Arbeloa: Fulham's Gamble Has Yet to Pay Off

Álvaro Arbeloa was a surprising appointment at Fulham following Marco Silva's departure. The Portuguese coach had established stability in west London, making the decision to hire Arbeloa a significant gamble. The Spaniard arrived after a brief and unsuccessful spell in charge of Real Madrid, and three consecutive Premier League defeats, accompanied by costly defensive errors, quickly raised doubts about his appointment.

Draws against Liverpool and Manchester United helped restore some confidence, but a defeat to Ipswich Town brought fresh scrutiny. Arbeloa subsequently secured back-to-back victories over Hull City and Coventry, providing some much-needed breathing room and an opportunity to move Fulham away from the relegation zone. Maintaining that improvement against stronger opposition will be crucial to his future.

Frank Lampard: Coventry's Promotion Won't Guarantee His Job

Frank Lampard rebuilt his managerial reputation by leading Coventry City back to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years. The former Chelsea midfielder guided the Sky Blues to the Championship title and earned the backing of a club well aware of the challenges awaiting them in the top flight. However, Coventry's return to the Premier League has been far more difficult than expected.

The newly promoted side lost six of their opening eight matches, scoring just six goals and conceding 15. Recent victories over Nottingham Forest and Newcastle United offered some relief following a demanding early schedule. With more manageable fixtures approaching, Lampard has an opportunity to build momentum, but Coventry must start collecting points consistently to avoid being dragged deeper into a relegation battle.

Four Managers Facing a Crucial Run of Results

  • Michael Carrick faces growing pressure following Manchester United's heavy defeat to Bournemouth and a string of disappointing performances.
  • Pierre Sage and Álvaro Arbeloa are struggling to establish consistency at Crystal Palace and Fulham after difficult starts.
  • Frank Lampard hopes to take advantage of a more favorable schedule to move Coventry City away from the relegation zone.
