Donnarumma Wins Trophy for Best Goalkeeper at 2025 Ballon d'Or Ceremony
Italian shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma has been crowned the world’s best goalkeeper, securing the 2025 Yashin Trophy thanks to a sensational year with PSG.
Donnarumma’s 2024-25 campaign with Paris Saint-Germain will be remembered as a masterclass in modern goalkeeping.
The 26-year-old played a pivotal role in PSG’s capture of five major trophies, including the Ligue 1 title and an historic UEFA Champions League crown, emerging as the backbone of a defense that frustrated some of Europe’s hottest attacks.
His saves in high-pressure knockout ties, notably against Liverpool, Arsenal, and Aston Villa, were repeatedly match-defining, earning him a reputation as the calm anchor under the brightest lights.
Beyond the club’s success, Donnarumma’s individual excellence was recognized with his inclusion in the Champions League Team of the Season, and his shot-stopping stats placed him at the top of Europe’s elite.
Manchester Move and Historic Double
After his heroics in the French capital, Donnarumma made a headline transfer to Manchester City during the summer window. He immediately impressed in England, conceding just one goal in marquee fixtures against Manchester United and Arsenal as City’s new number one.
Donnarumma’s 2025 Yashin Trophy is his second, following his first win in 2021, making him only the second goalkeeper ever to receive the honor twice.
This year, he edged out Alisson Becker (Liverpool) and Yann Sommer (Inter) for the top spot, as selected by a panel of international football journalists.
The Legacy of Donnarumma’s Season
Awarded at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, the Yashin Trophy win puts Donnarumma among the all-time greats.
He becomes the rare goalkeeper to place in the top ten for the men’s Ballon d’Or as well, finishing ninth overall, an achievement that speaks to his influence beyond just the penalty area.
Donnarumma’s emotional acceptance included praise for his PSG teammates and a look ahead to new challenges at Manchester City, stating, “There are a lot of brilliant goalkeepers around the world, so this is incredibly special to me. I know I can still improve and that’s a major reason why I chose to move to Manchester City.”
Already a two-time winner of one of football’s most prestigious individual awards—and still only 26—Donnarumma’s latest triumph raises the standard for the position, ensuring his story as one of the game’s defining goalkeepers is far from complete.
