Coventry sign young defender Mfuni on loan from Man City

  • Coventry City have continued their transfer business with the signing of Stephen Mfuni after beginning their season with two league losses.

Coventry City have brought in young defender Stephen Mfuni on a season-long loan from Manchester City.

Mfuni becomes Frank Lampard's 11th signing since Coventry's promotion to the Premier League and will represent the Sky Blues in 2026-27.

The 18-year-old joined City's academy as an eight-year-old in 2016 and made his first-team debut in January during their 10-1 FA Cup third-round win over Exeter City.

Shortly after, he joined Championship side Watford on loan for the rest of the campaign, going on to make eight appearances.

"I feel blessed to be here; it's exciting," Mfuni, who won the FA Youth Cup with City in 2023-24, told Coventry's website.

"These are moments you dream of, and to do it with such a good team and a good squad, I'm looking forward to it.

"I spoke to the gaffer; he wants me to show what I normally do on the pitch, whether I'm at left-back or centre-back, and for me to keep being me and do what I do.

"It feels good and feels like somewhere I can be at home. I'm looking forward to seeing the fans and for them to see why I'm here."

Mfuni, who can play at centre-back or left-back, has also represented England from Under-16 to Under-19 level.

Coventry have begun life back in the Premier League with back-to-back defeats, and face Manchester City in their next top-flight match.
