After weeks of rumors, potential offers and several clubs monitoring his situation, Enzo Fernández’s future is beginning to become clearer. Everything points to the Argentine midfielder remaining at Chelsea this season.
Chelsea Defines Enzo Fernández’s Future
Xabi Alonso was quite clear when asked about the player ahead of the Blues’ Premier League opener against Fulham. The Spanish coach said Enzo is working normally, is fully focused on the upcoming match and remains part of his plans.
“Enzo is a Chelsea player. We are happy with him and he is preparing for Monday’s game,” Alonso said.
A message that, at least for now, appears to close the door on a departure.
The Deadline Passed and Enzo Remains in London
The Argentine’s situation had generated plenty of uncertainty throughout the summer.
At the end of May, Chelsea reportedly reached an agreement with the player’s agent, Javier Bastori, that would have allowed him to leave if an offer worth £120 million arrived before August 14.
The deadline passed without any official bid meeting those conditions.
With that scenario now behind them, the club’s position has changed. Enzo remains a Chelsea player and, barring a major twist before the transfer window closes, will stay at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso also highlighted the way the Argentine returned to work after competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“He has integrated very well,” the coach explained, while also pointing out that the midfielder has been training at a high level.
“I see very good behavior from him, and that is what we want.”
Manchester City Continue to Monitor the Situation
Chelsea’s desire to keep Enzo does not mean interest from elsewhere has disappeared.
Manchester City continue to monitor the Argentine’s situation after losing important pieces in midfield. Rodri’s move to FC Barcelona left a major hole, while Bernardo Silva also departed after his contract expired.
Enzo would give City quality when playing out from the back, the ability to break lines with his passing and the experience to control the tempo from midfield.
However, taking the Argentine away from London now appears considerably more difficult.
Manchester City are also working on other options and continue to have young midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi on their radar as they look to strengthen that area of the squad..
Chelsea Send Enzo a Message of Confidence
The relationship between Enzo Fernández and a section of the supporters has also been under scrutiny.
During Chelsea’s 3-1 friendly victory over Real Sociedad, the Argentine received some boos when he came on as a substitute, although another section of the crowd at Stamford Bridge responded with applause and chants of support.
The club, however, sent a very clear message.
After replacing Reece James, Enzo was handed the captain’s armband, a gesture that was difficult to ignore after a summer filled with speculation surrounding his future.
There was also the possibility of a move to Real Madrid during the opening weeks of the transfer window, but that scenario ultimately failed to progress.
Now the situation looks very different.
Enzo is training, Xabi Alonso is counting on him and Chelsea did not receive the offer required to open the door to a departure before the established deadline.
There is still time left in the transfer window, and in soccer a late twist can never be completely ruled out.
But for now, the message coming out of London appears quite clear:
Enzo Fernández is staying, barring a last-minute surprise.
