Carrick Bets on Mainoo’s Learning After a World Cup Without Minutes

Although he didn't play in the World Cup, Michael Carrick assures that Mainoo gained key learnings that prepare him for a demanding season at United.

A historic World Cup for England, but no minutes for Mainoo

Michael Carrick, Manchester United's coach, believes that the experience Kobbie Mainoo gained at the North American World Cup will be key for his development, even tho the midfielder didn't play a single minute. England reached a historic third place after losing 2-1 to Argentina in the semifinals and defeating France 6-4 in a thrilling third-place match. It was the best result for the "Three Lions" outside their country. However, on a personal level, the tournament left a bitter taste for Mainoo, relegated by Thomas Tuchel behind Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson. An injury even sidelined him from the possibility of adding minutes in the last match.

Carrick enthusiastic

Back in training with United, Carrick preferred to highlight the positive: "I spoke with him throughout the World Cup. It's challenging, from the outside it looks glamorous, but the players are human beings and have ups and downs. It's important to support each other. It was a good experience for Kobbie, just being there is already a big step. He is young, he has achieved a lot in a short time. Of course, it's frustrating not to play, but that also has its challenges. He returned with great enthusiasm and is ready for the new season." Asked whether Tuchel should have given him minutes, Carrick was diplomatic: "Everyone has their own opinion. It's a squad full of good players, it's England in a World Cup. It's not my place to criticize. The important thing is that Kobbie is in a good place, ready for a great season."

Internal competition and the need for reinforcements at United

Mainoo will face greater competition at the club following the additions of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, as well as goalkeeper Karl Darlow as a backup for Senne Lammens. Carrick acknowledged that they are still expecting more reinforcements: "We want more, we need more. Money is money, but we must push in everything we participate in, being realistic with recent history."
