Burnley 2-2 Tottenham: Romero rises late to rescue a point for under-pressure Frank
Cristian Romero salvaged a late draw against Burnley, though Tottenham are still yet to pick up a Premier League win in 2026.
Cristian Romero was Tottenham's hero as his 90th-minute header rescued a 2-2 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor, and potentially buy more time for Thomas Frank.
Lyle Foster’s scrappy 76th-minute goal looked to have brought an end to Burnley’s long winless run in the Premier League, but Romero’s powerful leveller denied them a first victory since October.
After a series of chances – including two well-taken free-kicks by Pedro Porro – Spurs took the lead in the 38th minute through Micky van de Ven’s driven finish.
Burnley responded swiftly, however, with Axel Tuanzebe calmly drawing the Clarets level on the stroke of half-time.
Foster’s fortunate finish off a rebound from Guglielmo Vicario’s save came after a series of threatening Burnley chances, including two efforts from Armando Broja.
Tottenham responded in kind late on though, as Martin Dubravka brilliantly kept out Mathys Tel’s clever flick before Xavi Simons struck the crossbar with a fierce effort.
But Spurs' equaliser arrived when former Burnley winger Wilson Odobert delivered for Romero to thump home, although Frank will still find himself under growing pressure following another disappointing league result.
Data Debrief: Romero comes to the fore once more
Spurs had their two centre-backs, Romero and Van de Ven, to thank for their goals on Saturday. In fact, Frank’s side have scored more headed goals (10) and had more goals scored via defenders (nine) than any other side in the Premier League this season.
Meanwhile, all four of Romero’s league goals this term have drawn Tottenham level, with no other player netting more equalisers than the Spurs captain.
Owing to those late chances, Spurs created 2.3 expected goals (xG) and will feel deserving of at least a point, while Burnley managed a respectable 1.44 xG.
Scott Parker’s side, who sit 19th, are now winless in their last 14 Premier League games (D5 L9) – their longest run in the top-flight since between August and October 1970 (also 14).
