Arne Slot Feels Secure At Liverpool Despite His Disastrous Season
The Dutch manager addressed the growing doubts surrounding his future at Liverpool after a disappointing campaign.
Liverpool is enduring a season far below expectations
The Liverpool season has been nowhere near the standards expected at Anfield. After competing for major trophies last year, the Reds collapsed during the 2025-26 Premier League campaign and currently sit 20 points behind leaders Arsenal with only two matches remaining.
The side managed by Arne Slot has already suffered 18 defeats across all competitions, an alarming number for one of Europe’s biggest clubs. In fact, since returning to the top flight in 1962, Liverpool had only lost more matches during seasons such as 1992-93, 2004-05, and 2009-10.
Slot believes he will remain at Anfield
Despite criticism, speculation, and growing tension with sections of the fanbase, Slot made it clear that he still believes he will continue as Liverpool manager next season.
“I have every reason to believe I will be the Liverpool manager next season,” the Dutch coach told reporters when asked about his future.
Slot also reminded everyone that he remains under contract with the club and explained that internal conversations with Liverpool’s hierarchy have given him confidence. Still, he admitted that comparing this season with the previous campaign makes it impossible to describe the year as successful.
The relationship with supporters is beginning to crack
One of the most uncomfortable moments of Liverpool’s season came during the recent 1-1 draw against Chelsea, when part of the Anfield crowd reacted angrily after Slot substituted exciting young forward Rio Ngumoha.
Speculation around the Dutch manager’s future intensified even further due to reports linking former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso with a potential move to Chelsea at the end of the season. Even if the rumors are not directly tied to Liverpool, Alonso’s name quickly became part of the conversation surrounding the club’s future.
Slot also spoke openly about modern football culture and the constant criticism managers now face. “That is the new reality of football,” the Liverpool boss admitted while defending the right of fans and media to express their opinions.
Liverpool is still fighting for a Champions League place
Despite their disappointing domestic campaign, Liverpool still has a chance to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League if they manage to defeat Aston Villa on Friday.
Slot also received several positive injury updates ahead of one of the club’s biggest matches of the season. Mohamed Salah is expected to return after missing the last two matches with a muscle injury, while Ibrahima Konaté has returned to training.
The Dutch manager also confirmed progress in the recoveries of Alisson Becker and Florian Wirtz, although both players remain doubtful for the clash at Villa Park.
The pressure around Slot continues to grow
Although he publicly projects calmness and confidence, the reality is that pressure surrounding Arne Slot will continue increasing as long as Liverpool remains far away from competing for major trophies.
Qualifying for the next Champions League could temporarily ease tensions at Anfield, but after such a disappointing campaign, the Dutchman knows perfectly well that next season’s margin for error will be almost nonexistent.
