Onana could get another chance at United following Amorim’s departure
INEOS shook the Premier League last week by surprisingly sacking Ruben Amorim as Manchester United’s head coach, plunging the club into chaos. But for some players, chaos can be an opportunity, and Andre Onana seems to be in that position.
Exiled in Turkey
Onana joined United from Inter Milan in the summer of 2023 for £47.2 million, with the expectation of improving the team’s ability to play out from the back. However, just two years later, the Cameroonian goalkeeper is on loan at Turkish side Trabzonspor, reflecting how far that plan has strayed.
The former Ajax and Inter star was dropped from the starting eleven in favor of Altay Bayindir following several disagreements with Amorim, including an incident during pre-season when Onana showed up injured after a casual kickaround. His push for a new contract after an uneven season also angered the club, especially following the defeat to Tottenham in the Europa League final.

The arrival of young Belgian goalkeeper Senne Lammens, just 23 years old, permanently relegated Onana to third choice, and United arranged a loan to Trabzonspor with no option to buy, covering the player’s full wages. In Turkey, Onana has shown the same inconsistencies as he did in England, keeping a clean sheet in only three matches, while his team sits third in the Super Lig, seven points behind league leaders Galatasaray.
Hope for a Return
Despite his recent struggles, Amorim’s departure has sparked hope for Onana to return to United’s first team. According to sources close to the player cited by i Paper, if a manager arrives who values goalkeepers capable of playing the ball with their feet, like Xavi, Onana could get another chance.
Although his performances in Turkey have not been spectacular, the goalkeeper himself considers his chances to be “very limited,” but at least he has shown more self-awareness since his controversial days at Old Trafford. If he manages to regain the trust of a new manager, Onana could be one of the biggest beneficiaries of the change in United’s coaching staff.
