A Wink to Real Madrid? Rodri Doesn’t Rule Out Playing at the Bernabéu
The Manchester City midfielder did not rule out playing for Real Madrid in the future. Despite his Atlético past, the 2024 Ballon d’Or made it clear that no player can turn down the world’s biggest clubs.
Rodri breaks his silence about Real Madrid
The words of Rodrigo Hernández “Rodri” have shaken the European football scene. The Manchester City midfielder and 2024 Ballon d’Or winner did not close the door to a potential future with Real Madrid, despite having previously played for Atlético de Madrid during his early career.
During an interview with Radioestadio Noche on Onda Cero, the Spanish international delivered a statement that quickly went viral: “The fact I played for Atlético de Madrid does not stop me from playing for Real Madrid. You cannot refuse the best clubs in the world.”
Many interpreted the comment as a clear wink toward the Spanish giants, especially at a time when Madrid continues to evaluate options to strengthen its midfield for the future. Rodri, widely regarded as one of the most complete midfielders in the world, has long been linked with the club led by Florentino Pérez.
A Ballon d’Or back on Spanish football’s radar
At 29 years old, Rodri is enjoying the best moment of his career. After winning the 2024 Ballon d’Or, the midfielder cemented his status as one of the key leaders of Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, the club he joined in 2019 and with which he has won multiple titles.
However, the player himself made it clear that returning to Spanish football is something he has considered. In the same interview, he admitted that coming back to his homeland is an appealing idea.
“I would like to return to Spain, obviously,” the Madrid-born midfielder admitted.
His comments quickly drew attention, particularly because Real Madrid has historically shown interest in signing a midfielder with his profile: tactically intelligent, dominant in ball recovery, and essential in building play from deep.
The contract factor and the door left open
Currently, Rodri is under contract with Manchester City until 2027, meaning any potential move would require complex negotiations. Even so, the player acknowledged that there will eventually be a moment to discuss his future.
According to his remarks, any potential talks would go through his representatives rather than directly with him.
“They don’t speak with me. They speak with my agent,” he said when asked whether he had ever heard that Real Madrid’s president or executives admired him.

A signing that would fit Real Madrid’s project
Beyond the headlines, Rodri’s profile fits almost perfectly with what Real Madrid could need in the coming years. The Spanish club has invested heavily in a new generation of midfielders, but balance between youth, experience, and leadership remains essential.
The Spaniard, developed in Atlético de Madrid’s academy and later established at the elite level after spells with Villarreal and Manchester City, brings all those qualities.
