Spurs sack Ange Postecoglou despite Europa League win and ending a years-long title drought
Tottenham Hotspur officially announced on Friday that manager Ange Postecoglou will not continue at the club next season—just two weeks after leading the team to a UEFA Europa League title in the final against Manchester United.
A surprise goodbye despite European glory
In a statement, the North London club said that “after a performance review and serious reflection, the club can confirm he has been relieved of his duties.” Despite that historic European trophy, Spurs' poor showing in the Premier League, where they finished 17th, played a key role in the decision.
Tottenham acknowledged that Postecoglou, who arrived in 2023, brought back the attacking style of play the club is known for. They also highlighted the significance of reaching—and winning—the Europa League final in Bilbao, beating Manchester United.
A trophy that wasn’t enough
“We’re extremely thankful to Ange for his dedication and everything he’s given over the past two years. He’ll always be remembered as just the third manager in our history to win a European trophy, alongside legends like Bill Nicholson and Keith Burkinshaw,” the club said.
Still, the Board of Directors stated the decision was unanimous and made with the club’s long-term future in mind: “While winning the Europa League stands as one of our greatest moments, we can’t let emotions drive our decision-making after a difficult league campaign.”
For now, Tottenham hasn’t named a new head coach, but hinted that a “new direction” is needed to be competitive on all fronts next season. The club called this “one of the toughest decisions” it’s ever made, though it believes the “strong foundation” built by Postecoglou, with a young and talented squad, will be key going forward.
