Sources: Liverpool closing in on Florian Wirtz after record-breaking bid to Bayer Leverkusen
Liverpool is on the verge of pulling off one of the biggest signings in English football history: Florian Wirtz. According to Sky Sports News and The Athletic, the Anfield club has made a massive bid of €130 million (around $141 million) to Bayer Leverkusen to secure the young German star this summer. The offer, which includes performance-based bonuses, would make Wirtz the most expensive signing in the club’s history — and potentially break the Premier League transfer record.
A historic fee on the table
Although Leverkusen initially set Wirtz's price at €150 million, negotiations are progressing well, and it looks like the German side might accept slightly less. At just 22 years old, Wirtz is coming off a sensational season: 16 goals and 15 assists, playing a key role in the club's historic double under Xabi Alonso. According to Bild and Liverpool Echo, the player himself is clear about his next step — he wants to play for Liverpool.
Despite serious interest from clubs like Bayern Munich and Manchester City, they’ve seemingly been left behind. Even after a major meeting with Bayern in May, Wirtz decided it was time to leave the Bundesliga. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the deal is now in its final stages, driven mostly by the player’s own desire to join the Reds. His close friendship with Jeremie Frimpong, who already signed for Liverpool for $38 million, also played a key role.
Nearing a Premier League record
If the deal goes through, Wirtz would become the second-most expensive signing in Premier League history — just behind the $133 million that Chelsea spent on Moisés Caicedo. For Liverpool, it would be an unprecedented investment — doubling what they paid for Virgil van Dijk (around $95 million) and far surpassing the $85 million spent on Darwin Núñez.
With Arne Slot now in charge, Liverpool is aiming to build a top-tier squad capable of challenging for major titles in Europe again. Bringing in Wirtz wouldn’t just be a major shift in the club’s transfer policy — it would be a bold statement: go all-in on young talent and commit to an ambitious new project.
