Rodri Returns and Takes Manchester City Closer to the Champions League
After an eight-month absence, Rodrigo Hernández stepped back onto the pitch for Manchester City, and his return couldn’t have come at a better time. Pep Guardiola’s side claimed a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth in the penultimate matchday of the Premier League, a result that puts them on the brink of securing qualification for the next Champions League.

The Spanish midfielder, who suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury last September during a match against Arsenal, made his long-awaited comeback on Tuesday, playing the final ten minutes at the Etihad Stadium. His return was celebrated by fans as a personal triumph and a key boost ahead of the season’s final stretch.
City Nears Champions League Spot with Rodri’s Return
With this win, Manchester City now needs only a draw against Fulham in the final matchday to secure a place in Europe’s top competition. Even if they finish level on points with the likes of Newcastle United, Chelsea, or Aston Villa, City holds a superior goal difference that gives them the edge.
The night also featured what may have been Kevin De Bruyne’s final performance at the Etihad. The Belgian was honored with a standing ovation and a massive tifo, a tribute worthy of his legacy at the club. Although he missed a clear chance to score with an open goal, his influence on the game remains unquestionable.
There were tense moments as well, including Mateo Kovacic’s red card for a last-man foul, but City’s offensive power still shone through. Bernardo Silva made it 2-0 with a smart finish, and late in the match, Nico González sealed the victory with a stunning goal.
For Bournemouth, a late consolation goal by Jebbison only served to reduce the deficit. The loss definitively ends their chances of European competition next season.
Meanwhile, Rodri’s return not only strengthens City heading into the final stage of the campaign, but it’s also a major boost ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, which kicks off on June 14, where Guardiola’s team is among the favorites to win the title.
