Liverpool Announce Two More Departures
Liverpool announced on Friday that both Thiago Alcántara and Joel Matip will leave the club at the end of the season.
Liverpool announced on Friday that both Thiago Alcántara and Joel Matip will leave the club at the end of the season when their respective contracts with the English club expire.
Thiago, who joined Liverpool in 2020 as a reigning Champions League winner with Bayern Munich, enjoyed three prolific seasons at the English club. However, a hip injury followed by muscular problems have overshadowed his final year at Anfield.
The Spanish midfielder has barely featured this season, playing only five minutes as a substitute in a match against Arsenal before suffering a recurrence of muscular issues that have kept him sidelined since then.
"I know injuries have been a frustration for him, but I also know the level he played at and it was incredible. I'll take that with me," said Jürgen Klopp.
"Now he will go in a new direction with his family, and I can only wish him the best. Wherever he plays, I'll be happy to see him. He's an artist of the game who only paints the most beautiful pictures," added the German.
He leaves Liverpool with an FA Cup and a League Cup title under his belt. At 33 years old, Thiago becomes a free agent and can negotiate with any club.
