Is Pep Guardiola Saying Goodbye to The Bench? Here's What He Said About his Future at Manchester City
Amid growing doubts over Manchester City’s inconsistent performances this season, Spanish coach Pep Guardiola has broken his silence regarding his future. While he didn’t announce an immediate departure, the 54-year-old manager hinted that once his time at the English club comes to an end, he plans to take a break from coaching.
“When my time here is up—whether it’s in one, two, or five years—I’ll take a break. I’m not retiring, but I do need to step away for a while,” Guardiola said in an interview with Sky Sports. With these words, he made it clear that his continuity depends on how things unfold with the club and how he feels personally.
It’s worth noting that Guardiola renewed his contract with City last November, extending his stay until June 2027. By then, he will have completed 11 seasons at the helm, marking a dominant era in domestic competitions and consistent presence in Europe’s elite.
Despite all his success, this campaign hasn’t been the best for the Sky Blues, who were knocked out in the Champions League Round of 16 and have fallen behind in the Premier League title race, which now seems to favor Liverpool.
An unconvincing victory
On the pitch, Manchester City earned a narrow 1–0 win over Wolverhampton, thanks to a goal from Kevin De Bruyne, but the performance left more questions than answers. The team looked strong in the first half, with a goal that started from a Bernardo Silva recovery and a fast break led by Ilkay Gündogan, which was finished by the Belgian midfielder. However, the second half was dull and lacked intensity, with both teams seemingly content with the result.
Despite the win, Guardiola’s side showed signs of wear and fatigue—fueling speculation that his cycle may be approaching its end. The coach himself avoided giving a specific date for his departure, but his comments have sparked rumors in England and abroad, where he’s been linked with national teams like Brazil, and clubs in Saudi Arabia.
For now, Guardiola remains focused on finishing the season as strongly as possible and securing City’s place in the next Champions League, though the possibility of a career pause already looms on the horizon.
