Is Dibu Saying Goodbye to the Premier League? Saudi Arabia Wants Him Now
The future of Emiliano “Dibu” Martínez is once again in the spotlight as the transfer window approaches. According to reports from the prestigious British outlet The Telegraph, the Argentine goalkeeper from Aston Villa is on the radar of several Saudi Pro League clubs in what could be a significant career shift for both the player and the English team.
Alongside the World Cup-winning goalkeeper, winger Leon Bailey is also reportedly attracting interest from Saudi teams. Although the specific clubs have yet to be named, a source close to Middle Eastern football confirmed to the British media that both players are being seriously considered as potential signings for the upcoming season.
A potential farewell after shining in England
Martínez, 32, has been a key figure for Aston Villa, consistently delivering standout performances in recent seasons — including a strong showing in Villa’s 1-0 win over Bayern Munich in this season’s Champions League. The Argentine goalkeeper won the Yashin Trophy and was named FIFA’s Best Goalkeeper in 2022 following Argentina’s World Cup triumph in Qatar.
Since joining Arsenal in 2010, Martínez has spent most of his career in England, with loan spells at clubs like Sheffield Wednesday, Oxford United, and Wolverhampton before finding stability at Aston Villa in 2020. He has played a crucial role in the club’s recent rise, helping secure Champions League qualification.
Martínez signed a contract extension in 2022 that ties him to Villa until 2029, making him one of the club’s highest earners. However, Saudi interest comes at a time when Villa may need to balance their books to comply with Premier League financial regulations.
Bailey could be on his way out too
As for Leon Bailey, the Jamaican winger has seen his role diminish under manager Unai Emery in recent months. Although he recently extended his contract until 2027, his decreased playing time has made him a likely candidate for transfer as the club looks to reshape its squad.
While no deal has been finalized, Aston Villa appears open to listening to significant offers — particularly if they can help strengthen the squad for next season. One potential replacement for Martínez being mentioned is Joan García from Espanyol, who reportedly has a £21 million release clause.
Will Dibu make the move to Saudi Arabia? Nothing is set in stone yet, but the rumors are gaining momentum and it looks to be a busy summer ahead at Villa Park.
