Igor Angulo Analyzes Górnik Zabrze’s Resurgence and the Growth of the Ekstraklasa
In an exclusive interview with beIN Sports USA, Igor Angulo reflected on the highly competitive state of the Ekstraklasa, highlighted the impact of Lukas Podolski at Górnik Zabrze, and praised the club’s progress after winning the Polish Cup.
1. How do you see the current Ekstraklasa season compared to previous years?
I see it as very balanced and highly competitive. There hasn’t been one clear dominant team, and many clubs have been fighting for different objectives throughout the season. That makes the league much more exciting to follow, especially because everything remains open until the very end.
2. What do you think about the performance of your former club, Górnik Zabrze, especially after winning the Polish Cup after so many years?
I was absolutely delighted. The club and its supporters truly deserved a moment like this after such a long wait for a title. On top of that, the team has shown great character and consistency throughout the season, which makes the achievement even more meaningful.
3. How important has the arrival of Lukas Podolski been for the club, both on and off the pitch?
He has been extremely important. Not only because of what he has contributed on the field over the years, but also because of his personality, leadership, and experience. His presence has had a big impact on the club’s environment, helping to raise its profile and bring more ambition to the entire project.
4. How do you evaluate the transformation process and the new sporting project being built at Górnik?
I think things are being done with a stronger sense of stability now and with a clearer long-term vision. That’s essential if the club wants to grow in a sustainable way and continue improving year after year.
5. In your opinion, what is Górnik still missing to make the final step and consistently fight for league titles?
Probably a bit more squad depth and financial stability. To compete for titles every season, you need to maintain a strong core group of players while also having high-quality alternatives who can step in without lowering the level of the team.
6. Do you see Górnik ready to compete in Europe next season? What would they need to do it successfully?
Yes, I believe they can compete, especially because of their atmosphere, passionate supporters, and the team’s character. However, European competitions demand a lot physically, so they would need a deeper squad and a bit more experience to handle key moments effectively.

7. What is your opinion of coach Michał Gašparík, and what has changed since his arrival?
He seems like a coach with strong personality and very clear ideas. Since his arrival, the team looks more organized, more competitive, and mentally stronger. You can tell that the players believe in his methods and are fully committed to his approach.

8. What has surprised you the most about this Ekstraklasa season—teams, players, or style of play?
What surprised me most is the level of balance between so many teams, as well as the physical intensity of the matches. The league is becoming increasingly demanding, and every game requires a high level of focus and effort.
9. Who do you think has been the best player in the league this season, and why?
It’s very difficult to choose just one, as several players have had outstanding seasons. Of course, I would like to highlight someone from Górnik, but the truth is that the team’s greatest strength has been its unity—no individual stands above the group, and that collective spirit has made the difference.
10. What do you think about Jesús Imaz’s record as the top foreign scorer in the league’s recent history?
I think it’s an incredible achievement. Maintaining such a high level for so many years away from your home country requires great dedication and quality. He’s a player who has truly made his mark on the Ekstraklasa.
The historic Spanish striker made it clear that Górnik Zabrze is once again inspiring excitement among its fans, thanks to a solid and ambitious project. For Igor Angulo, the Ekstraklasa is going through one of its most competitive eras, with clubs increasingly prepared to make the leap and compete on the European stage.
