Toronto FC v Orlando City: Pareja no stranger to 'must-win' notion
Orlando City can solidify their playoff position by beating Toronto FC in their final MLS regular-season game of 2025.
Oscar Pareja has claimed that “the need to win is familiar to us” as Orlando City head to Toronto FC looking to consolidate their playoff spot.
Pareja’s men have gone three matches without a win, scoring just once across that stretch, and have struggled on the road recently with no victories in their last three away fixtures.
Despite that, Orlando have form for finishing strongly on decision day, winning their last two season finales away from home.
A win in Toronto, combined with dropped points from Nashville SC, could lift them back into the Eastern Conference’s top six.
“We are recognising the importance of the day and the consequences,” said Pareja.
“We are getting ready and receiving the players who have been away. We are preparing our group in the best way possible.
“This is another must-win game if we want to avoid the wild card spots. The need to win is very familiar to us.”
For a fifth consecutive year, Toronto have missed out on the playoffs, and a defeat on Saturday would see them finish with fewer than 30 points for the fifth time in a 34-match campaign.
Toronto have drawn eight of their last nine games, but have failed to celebrate a victory since their 1-0 win at San Diego FC back in July.
Another winless outing here would confirm their worst-ever home record in MLS, with just two victories so far this season.
Despite their abysmal campaign, though, they remain unbeaten in six straight games at BMO Field, and have come from behind to draw four of those matches.
“We feel like we’ve made real strides this year, in terms of our cohesion and playing like a team,” said coach Robin Fraser.
“We are still looking for the best setup for us. We’re still in the building phase of this project.”
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Toronto FC – Theo Corbeanu
Corbeanu is Toronto FC’s top scorer this season with six league goals, a total that matches Austin FC’s Myrto Uzuni and Owen Wolff for the lowest among any team’s leading scorer.
In 2025, Toronto and Real Salt Lake are the only clubs with just one player reaching five or more goals.
Orlando City – Alexander Freeman
Freeman has scored Orlando's only goal in their last two away league games, becoming the first defender in the club’s MLS history to score in consecutive road matches.
Another goal here would extend that record, and could also prove vital in Orlando's playoff push.
MATCH PREDICTION: ORLANDO WIN
Orlando have dominated recent proceedings against Toronto, winning eight of the last 10 meetings (one draw, one loss) since the start of the 2021 season.
That mark matches Orlando’s best record over a 10-game span against any opponent, a feat previously achieved against Columbus between 2018 and 2023.
Orlando have won seven consecutive matches against Toronto and are unbeaten in six successive visits to BMO Field.
Toronto, meanwhile, have managed only two wins in 16 home matches this season (seven draws, seven losses) and would tie a club record for the fewest home victories in a single season (three) with a win.
Orlando have found the net in 22 consecutive regular-season matches — the longest active scoring streak in MLS and the longest in the club’s history. The last team to record a longer single-season run was the New York Red Bulls in 2015, who scored in 23 straight games.
