Seattle Sounders v St. Louis City SC: Hosts suffer fresh Morris injury blow
The Seattle Sounders will be without all-time top scorer Jordan Morris for their clash against St. Louis City in the MLS this weekend.
Seattle forward Jordan Morris will be out an estimated six weeks due to a left hamstring injury, Brian Schmetzer confirmed ahead of the Sounders' MLS clash with St. Louis City.
Morris, the Sounders' all-time top scorer, suffered an injury in their 1-1 draw with the Colorado Rapids and was replaced in the closing stages by Danny Musovski.
The striker walked off unassisted and suspected the injury was not severe, according to Schmetzer's post-game comments at the weekend.
But after undergoing two scans, the evaluation showed Morris had picked up the same injury he suffered back in March during a CONCACAF Champions Cup game.
"It's the same spot and that's what they're concerned about," Schmetzer said of the club's medical team on Morris' injury.
"Jordan felt fine," Schmetzer said of his recovery from the March hamstring injury. "He sprinted 98% of his max on multiple occasions.
"The 30 minutes he played against Nashville, the total distance in sprint was higher than the 45 minutes he played in Colorado.
"So it wasn't a drastic increase in sprint distance that happened. So, we're turning over everything just to figure it out."
St. Louis, meanwhile, are without a win in their last six MLS games, but were within touching distance of a third win of the campaign in their last league fixture.
Leading Los Angeles FC 2-1, Denis Bouanga, who had missed an earlier penalty, sealed a share of the spoils deep into stoppage time.
Olof Mellberg's time find themselves down in 12th in the Western Conference after their recent run, with the St. Louis boss believing a victory is just around the corner.
"We've got to continue with this fighting spirit, the will to win," said Mellberg. "They're putting in a great effort out there, the boys, and have done so far for the whole season.
"They've got to really keep that going. And try to improve on the ball, and hopefully we will start winning games."
The result was their second consecutive draw after a stalemate with the league-leading Vancouver Whitecaps, with St. Louis midfielder Marcel Hartel believing his team have built a solid foundation to build on over the club's last to matches.
"We have a lot of confidence, we played against a very good opponent," Hartel explained. "LAFC is a very good team.
"We were so close to getting three points away from home, which is tough.
"Especially the second half, we have a lot of positive things that we can analyse and can take over to the next game in Seattle."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Seattle Sounders – Danny Musovski
Musovski has scored a goal in three straight league games for the first time in his MLS career.
Only four players in Sounders history have scored in four consecutive regular-season matches, most recently Raul Ruidiaz between May and July 2019.
St. Louis City – Cedric Teuchert
Teuchert scored his seventh career regular-season goal on Sunday to go along with five assists.
His seven goals are the most by any St. Louis City player since his MLS debut last July, while his five assists are tied with Marcel Hartel for most on the team in that time.
MATCH PREDICTION: SEATTLE SOUNDERS WIN
Seattle have lost only one of their last 17 regular-season home matches (W9 D7) dating back to the start of May 2024, including going unbeaten in their last eight at Lumen Field (W4 D4).
St. Louis City, meanwhile, are winless in six straight matches (D2 L4) after conceding an equaliser in the fifth minute of stoppage time against LAFC on Sunday. They have had only one longer winless run in club history, a nine-match span between May and June 2024.
But this weekend's visitors won their last meeting with Seattle back in March, earning their first ever victory against them after losing their first four meetings. The Sounders won the first four matches by a combined score of 9-1, including 5-0 in two meetings at Lumen Field.
