Rodrigo De Paul’s Imminent Move to Inter Miami Could Confirm Messi’s Contract Renewal
The Argentine midfielder’s transfer to the MLS club strengthens the possibility of Lionel Messi extending his stay in the United States.
De Paul Will Leave Atlético to Join Inter Miami
Rodrigo De Paul is on the verge of joining Inter Miami, a move that could be key to ensuring Lionel Messi’s continued presence at the club. According to reports from Argentina, Atlético de Madrid has reached an agreement with the MLS franchise for a fee of €15 million plus add-ons. The midfielder is set to sign a four-year deal.
Since arriving at Atlético de Madrid in 2021 from Udinese, Rodrigo De Paul has been a regular under Diego Simeone, playing 187 matches and scoring 14 goals. However, his decision to leave Europe appears to be motivated by both personal and sporting reasons—particularly his desire to play alongside Messi, his close friend and national team partner with Argentina.
The 31-year-old will not take part in preseason training with the Spanish club and is expected to join Inter Miami immediately, where he’ll reunite with fellow stars such as Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, and Jordi Alba. The presence of former FC Barcelona teammates and several Argentinians reportedly influenced his decision.
The Arrival of Messi’s Closest Ally Could Seal His Renewal
One of the main factors in Lionel Messi’s decision to renew his contract with Inter Miami has been the environment the club can build around him. The signing of De Paul, widely regarded as his on- and off-field confidant, could be the final piece needed to extend the Argentine icon’s stay.
Although there was previous interest from Saudi Arabia and a potential return to Racing Club, De Paul chose to continue his career in a familiar and competitive setting—just a year before the 2026 World Cup. His move to the United States might even serve as a prelude to a possible homecoming after the tournament.
For now, the Albiceleste’s “engine” is packing his bags for Miami, and with him comes a wave of hope for the fans—not only for his contribution on the pitch but also for the likely extension of Lionel Messi’s time at Inter Miami.
