Rodrigo de Paul Reveals His Talks With Scaloni and Messi Before Signing With Inter Miami
Rodrigo De Paul has become one of the most talked-about signings of the transfer window. The Argentine midfielder left Atlético de Madrid to join the ambitious project at Inter Miami, where he will reunite with his friend and national team captain, Lionel Messi. Beyond the sporting change, his decision was shaped by key conversations with figures like Lionel Scaloni and Messi himself.
Scaloni and Messi: the key voices behind his move
Before putting pen to paper on his deal with the Florida franchise—set to run through 2029—De Paul had a crucial conversation with the Argentina national team coach, who made it clear what he expects for the midfielder to remain part of the squad. “I spoke with Leo (Scaloni), and I was straightforward with him. He told me that the only thing he’ll evaluate is what I do on the pitch,” said the 31-year-old, emphasizing that switching leagues won’t automatically cost him his spot with the national team.
Scaloni’s words, acknowledging De Paul’s long-standing commitment and performance, gave him the final push he needed to take the leap to MLS. “As long as you play and are physically well, I know the kind of player you are,” the coach reportedly said.
A shared dream with Messi
De Paul’s move to Inter Miami was also fueled by the active involvement of Messi, who not only welcomed him to the club but also took part in the negotiation process. “He was very involved. He called, asked questions, wanted to know if everything was moving forward. He even came to the club to greet me as soon as I arrived,” said the former Atlético player. He also revealed that the idea of playing together at club level had been discussed for some time—wanting to bring their Argentina success to a shared day-to-day environment.

Behind the scenes, Jorge Messi, Lionel’s father, also played a key role in making the deal happen, reportedly holding discussions with Atlético de Madrid once it became clear De Paul had just a year left on his contract.
Now officially a Herons player, De Paul made his debut in a 2-1 victory against Atlas of Mexico in the Leagues Cup, and is ready to bring his experience to the Miami-based team coached by Gerardo Martino.
Despite the move across the Atlantic, Rodrigo De Paul made one thing clear: his place in the Scaloneta is still within reach—if his performances speak for themselves.
