Orlando City v New England Revolution: Porter seeking more goals in tough road test
Orlando City and New England Revolution are two of the in-form teams defensively, and go head-to-head at Inter & Co Stadium on Saturday.
New England Revolution head coach Caleb Porter is delighted with his team's recent performances, but wants them to be freer in front of goal for their trip to Orlando City in MLS.
The Revs have won their last four matches in the league, keeping a clean sheet each time, with three of those victories coming on the road.
They are ninth in the Eastern Conference with 16 points but could move above their opponents with a win on Saturday.
While Porter has been impressed with his side's defensive performances in recent weeks, he is hoping their confidence in front of goal can continue to grow.
"We need our strikers to produce goals," he said. "When you look at our system and how we're playing, we're starting to get the strikers going now.
"I felt like we attacked really well [against Toronto FC], got into great spots and had big chances. It was another professional performance that got us another clean sheet and a third road win in a row.
"That's very difficult to be doing what we're doing on the road, and it's not going to get any easier with Orlando. It's probably our toughest game of the year."
Orlando, meanwhile, are just one point and one place above New England in the East, having faltered slightly since the start of April.
While they are currently on an eight-match unbeaten streak, they have won just one of their last five, drawing the other four 0-0.
They beat the Tampa Bay Rowdies 5-0 to progress in the U.S. Open Cup in midweek, and head coach Oscar Pareja is hopeful they can carry that form into the match against the Revs.
"I think the scoring [in the U.S. Open Cup] was so healthy for us," he said.
"Our first objective was to try to keep the pace that we have defensively, being solid, but we needed to become a team that was scoring again. So that's something we're happy about.
"Now we're excited to put our minds to the next one against New England at home, but that game was one that we needed [to build confidence]."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
Orlando City – Pedro Gallese
Pedro Gallese has kept clean sheets in five straight games, with only one team in the last 15 years posting a longer run (six straight by New York City FC in 2022).
However, four of Orlando's last five matches have ended scoreless.
New England Revolution – Carles Gil
Carles Gil has recorded 11 career goal contributions against Orlando City (five goals, six assists), only contributing to more against the New York Red Bulls (12).
Gil has contributed to at least one goal in four straight regular-season matches for the fifth time in his MLS career.
MATCH PREDICTION: ORLANDO CITY WIN
Orlando City have won each of their last three meetings with New England, the longest winning streak by either team over the other in all competitions. In fact, prior to these three wins, Orlando had won just three of 18 all-time matches against the Revs (D7 L8).
Orlando are unbeaten in eight straight regular-season matches (W3 D5), including a scoreless draw against Chicago Fire on Saturday. This is Orlando's second-longest regular-season unbeaten run after a 12-match run in August-October 2020.
Meanwhile, New England have recorded four straight shutout wins for the second time in club history and the first since April-May 2005. Only two teams in MLS history have recorded five straight shutout wins: Los Angeles FC in 2024 and Atlanta United in 2019.
