New York Red Bulls v Atlanta United: Deila searching for more personality from resurgent visitors
In a clash between two of the Eastern Conference's in-form sides, the New York Red Bulls take on Atlanta United this weekend.
Atlanta United head coach Ronny Deila is confident his players can continue their recent resurgence after coming from behind to beat Orlando City SC late on in midweek.
The Five Stripes snapped their eight-game winless run with a victory over FC Cincinnati, following that up with a 3-2 triumph over Oscar Pareja's side.
After Cesar Araujo saw his opening goal cancelled out by Aleksey Miranchuk, Orlando retook the lead in the 32nd minute through Ramiro Enrique.
But Deila's team got themselves level seven minutes from time after Bartosz Slisz found the back of the net, with Jamal Thiare sealing the win in second-half stoppage time.
Atlanta make the trip to the Sports Illustrated Stadium this weekend to face another in-form side in the New York Red Bulls, but Deila is relishing the task ahead of his side.
"Credit to the players, of course. They are the guys that do the work out there," Deila, who called his side "soft" and lacking "killer instinct" a week and a half ago, said.
"We make it very difficult for ourselves again, concede very early in the game, and then also a very easy goal to concede on the second.
"But we kept believing, and in the second half, we were so dominant that in the end, they couldn't cope with it.
"And this is a team that I'm proud of, and more of what we want to look like. Being average is boring. I want to see more personality, more togetherness and more energy."
The Red Bulls come into this weekend's clash on the back of a statement win against Charlotte FC, beating Dean Smith's team 4-2, with Eric Choupo-Moting scoring twice.
Sandro Schwarz's side have now put together three consecutive wins across all competitions, scoring eight goals after back-to-back defeats in league play.
They sit seventh in the Eastern Conference standings, and Schwarz believes the competition for places within his squad can only help his team improve moving forward.
"It's great, of course, when we have a lot of games," Schwarz said. "We spoke after LA Galaxy, we played on Wednesday against Nashville and then Saturday against NYCFC.
"We didn't change a lot in the starting line-up but it gave us something to think about. We had to change and we did it last Wednesday in the US Open Cup. We need everyone.
"The decision was then clear that we played with a similar starting line-up and made only one change. And, of course, we will have some rotations on Saturday.
"Emil Forsberg will play. That's clear because he is our captain. He has fresh legs, and he is important to us. It's good to have these competitions to keep the group together."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
NYRB – Eric Choupo-Moting
Choupo-Moting has enjoyed a fine start to the season, netting nine goals in 16 appearances so far this season, with only Brian White (10) and Tai Baribo (13) scoring more.
He also ended the win over Charlotte with team-high totals for shots on target (two) and shots in the box (two), while also contributing a whopping 1.58 expected goals (xG) tally to NYRB's 2.15 total in the contest.
Atlanta United – Aleksey Miranchuk
After a slow start to the campaign, Miranchuk has been key to Atlanta's recent upturn in form, registering four goal involvements (one goal, three assists) in his last two league games.
The Russian also created more chances (three) and had more shots (three) than any of his team-mates against Orlando, and he will be looking to have a similar influence at the Sports Illustrated Stadium this time around.
And he has a good record against the Red Bulls, too. He has scored twice in three MLS games against them, more than he has managed against any other team in the competition.
MATCH PREDICTION: NYRB WIN
The Red Bulls have won five of their last six regular-season home matches (L1), including the last three in a row. They managed just three wins in their previous 12 home league matches dating back to last June.
And they have often had the better of this fixture. They have won 10 of their 19 meetings in the MLS (D6 L3) against Atlanta, but are without a victory in their last three encounters with the Five Stripes (D2 L1).
Atlanta's victory over Orlando was just the second time in club history that they have come back to win a match in which they were trailing in the 75th minute, but they will be hoping to make this game a little bit easier for themselves.
