Toronto FC's winless stretch in the MLS extended to 12 matches after they were held to a 1-1 draw against New York City FC at Yankee Stadium.

Djordje Mihailovic had cancelled out Nicolas Fernandez's eighth-minute penalty in first-half stoppage time, but Toronto were unable to complete the turnaround after the break. 

Robin Fraser's side are now without a league win since April 4 when they beat the Colorado Rapids 3-2, leaving them down in 12th in the Eastern Conference standings.

Toronto found themselves immediately on the back foot when Richie Laryea was penalised for a foul inside the penalty area on Agustin Ojeda, with Fernandez stepping up and squeezing the resulting spot-kick beyond the grasp of Luka Gavran. 

But the visitors equalised in the sixth minute of first-half stoppage time through Mihailovic, who tucked home from close range after Daniel Salloi had seen his initial effort saved. 

NYCFC threatened to restore their advantage nine minutes into the second half, but Toronto goalkeeper Gavran produced two point-blank stops in quick succession to deny Talles Magno and Andres Perea. 

Salloi thought he had won it for Toronto in the 73rd minute when he steered Derrick Etienne's cutback past Matt Freese, only to see the goal ruled out for offside as the spoils were shared between the two sides.

In-form Fernandez piles more misery on Toronto

Ahead of kick-off, Fraser was confident his team could put an end to their wretched run of form, but his hopes of a first win in almost four months were dashed as the pressure continued to ramp up on the Toronto boss. 

Toronto have now failed to win any of their last 12 regular season matches (D7 L5), only having a longer winless run in the MLS during the 2012 campaign, when they did not taste victory in 14 straight games.

And they fell behind thanks to NYCFC talisman Fernandez, who netted his 13th league goal of the season, tying him level with Petar Musa and Hugo Cuypers in the race for the Golden Boot, though the latter has completed a move to Monterrey from the Chicago Fire. 

But the Argentine's goal was unable to inspire his team to a third-straight league win, though Pascal Jansen may believe his side were worthy of all three points. NYCFC finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 2.12 from their 16 shots compared to Toronto's tally of 1.02 from their 13 attempts.
