New England Revolution v Orlando City: Porter seeking response after 'unfathomable' Red Bulls defeat
The New England Revolution and Orlando City are both looking to bounce back in MLS after disappointing results in midweek.
Caleb Porter lamented the New England Revolution's inability to see out games and is seeking a complete performance against Orlando City in MLS on Saturday.
The Revs have not won any of their last seven league matches and blew a 2-0 lead against the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday by conceding five second-half goals in a 5-3 defeat.
It leaves New England in 11th, seven points off the playoffs in the Eastern Conference. Porter was disappointed by Wednesday's second-half performance and is seeking a quick response.
"I feel like we have to put together a complete performance, because we have games where we defend really well, but we don't finish," Porter said, as quoted by the Blazing Musket substack.
"We have games where we attack really well, but then in that second half, we don't defend well.
"It's unfathomable to give up five goals in that second half in a very short amount of time. I don't think I've ever had that happen, and it's not good enough.
"The bottom line is we've got to win against Orlando at home. It's that simple. So, we've got to turnaround, recover, and we've got to win this next game at home. It's a massive game."
Orlando, meanwhile, are sixth in the East, 10 points better off than New England, though also come into this game on a winless run.
They have failed to win any of their last four outings and conceded twice in the closing minutes to lose 2-1 to New York City FC on Wednesday.
Oscar Pareja was downhearted by the result and, like Porter, believes his side need to work on closing out games better.
"We are not a team that can close out games," he said. "It's such a frustration that, at this point, we highlight the negativity and the feeling that the game slipped from our hands.
"We have to respond. The players did a bunch of good things [against NYCFC], but I don't want to point out anything from them. I'm responsible for the performance of the group, and we need to fix that."
PLAYERS TO WATCH
New England Revolution – Leonardo Campana
Leonardo Campana scored twice on Wednesday against the New York Red Bulls, matching his league goal total for the season entering the match.
It was Campana's sixth career MLS match with two or more goals, but his first since doing so with Inter Miami at Atlanta United in September 2023.
Orlando City – Robin Jansson
Playing in his club-record 184th MLS regular-season match, Robin Jansson scored the sixth goal of his MLS career on Wednesday.
The goal broke a tie with Seb Hines for most league goals by a defender in Orlando City history.
MATCH PREDICTION: ORLANDO CITY WIN
Orlando City are unbeaten in four straight meetings with New England (W3 D1), their longest ever unbeaten run in the 22-match history of the series across all competitions.
And Orlando have lost only one of their last 11 on the road in all competitions (W5 D5). The Lions have found the net in each of their last six on the road, totaling 17 goals in those matches (2.8 per match).
New England have managed just three wins in their last 16 home matches in all competitions dating back to last August (D6 L7), including going six straight without a win at home (D2 L4), the longest run for the team in all competitions since a seven-match run in 2011.
