Messi Suffers a Brutal Blow Near the Start of MLS: Inter Miami Confirm Sergio Reguilón’s Injury
In a tournament where they will be aiming for back-to-back titles and will no longer have players such as Sergi Busquets or Jordi Alba, Lionel Messi’s team has received bad news regarding the physical condition of their new signing ahead of the upcoming MLS season.
Inter Miami confirm Sergio Reguilón’s injury after his preseason debut
Inter Miami suffered a significant setback at the start of their preseason after confirming an injury to Spanish left-back Sergio Reguilón, sustained during the friendly match against Alianza Lima. The club reported that the player has a significant injury to his right knee, casting doubt on his availability for the start of the 2026 Major League Soccer (MLS) season.
Reguilón suffers a Grade 2 knee sprain
Following medical evaluations after the first preseason match, Inter Miami announced that Reguilón is dealing with a Grade 2 sprain, involving a partial ligament tear. Although the injury will not require surgery, the club clarified that no definitive timeline has been set for his return, as his recovery will be assessed on a week-to-week basis.
A key absence for the start of the MLS season
This type of injury typically sidelines players for two to six weeks, depending on their response to treatment. The recovery process includes managing inflammation, stabilizing the joint, and a gradual rehabilitation plan before a full return to training.
A difficult start for Inter Miami
The Florida side’s preseason began with both a sporting and medical blow. Inter Miami suffered a 3–0 loss to Alianza Lima on Noche Blanquiazul, with Paolo Guerrero scoring a first-half brace. Lionel Messi and the rest of the team struggled to create clear chances, in a performance that raised early concerns ahead of the new MLS campaign.
