Messi Speaking English? It Seems the Argentine Icon Is Finally Learning a New Language
Ref-cam footage from the MLS Cup 2025 final shows the Inter Miami superstar communicating in English during a key moment of the match.
The football world was caught off guard after new images surfaced showing Lionel Messi speaking English during the MLS Cup 2025 final. Since arriving in the United States in 2023, the Argentine legend has been surrounded by a large Spanish-speaking community in Miami, but the latest clip suggests that the “Pulga” has quietly been working on becoming bilingual. The moment was captured by the match referee’s camera during the title showdown against Vancouver.
From Barcelona to Miami: A Journey Without Language Barriers… Until Now
During his 21 unforgettable years with Barcelona, Messi never faced a major linguistic transition. In Catalunya, he shattered every club record imaginable and became an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner without ever needing to adapt to a new language. His move to Paris Saint-Germain from 2021 to 2023 also did not require dramatic communication changes, as he shared the dressing room with several Spanish-speaking teammates.
Everything shifted when he accepted the ambitious project of Inter Miami, backed by David Beckham. Settled in South Florida with Antonela and their three sons, Messi rediscovered his best form and expanded his legacy with new titles, including the Leagues Cup, the Supporters’ Shield, and most recently, the 47th trophy of his career after lifting the MLS Cup.
As captain of the Herons, Messi must frequently communicate with referees and opponents. While teammates are often willing to speak on his behalf, the Argentine has shown he is ready to step forward when necessary.
The Viral Moment and a New Stage of Growth Ahead
The referee-cam footage from the final against Vancouver shows the World Cup winner questioning a decision with a clear and confident “No foul?” The short clip, though simple, revealed that Messi already commands enough English to handle key in-game conversations.
Although he is still not comfortable enough to give full interviews in English, everything suggests that he will continue improving. His recent contract extension with Inter Miami, which runs through 2028, ensures he will spend several more years in an environment that encourages linguistic growth. He is also expected to be part of Argentina’s squad for the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico — yet another motivating factor to refine his English.
