Lionel Messi, the Favorite to Win the MLS MVP Award
The Argentine icon continues to dominate the MLS: nominated for MVP and signing a contract extension with Inter Miami until 2028.
Messi Leads the Race for MVP
Lionel Messi is once again the center of attention in the United States. The Argentine superstar has been named among the finalists for the 2025 MLS MVP Award, as announced by the league this Thursday. His competitors include Denis Bouanga (LAFC), Anders Dreyer (San Diego FC), Evander (Cincinnati), and Sam Surridge (Nashville SC).
Messi enters as the overwhelming favorite after finishing the regular season as the league’s top scorer and assist leader, with 29 goals and 19 assists — proof of his unmatched dominance in North American soccer.
A Renewal Worthy of a Legend
The MVP nomination came just hours after Inter Miami officially announced Messi’s contract extension through 2028, securing his future for three more seasons.
The deal reinforces his role as a global ambassador for the club and the city of Miami, including involvement in youth development programs and promotional efforts tied to the new Miami Freedom Park, expected to open in 2026.
“Miami is my home. I’m very happy to continue building this project with the club and with our people,” Messi said after signing his extension.
The Messi Effect on MLS
Since arriving in July 2023, Messi has completely transformed both Inter Miami and the MLS as a whole. In just over two years, the club has evolved from a rebuilding project into a global brand — breaking attendance records, increasing TV audiences, and boosting commercial revenue.
With 71 goals and 36 assists in 82 appearances, the No. 10 has redefined success in the league while raising the competitive bar for everyone around him. His impact transcends the pitch, fueling the sport’s growth in the U.S. ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
Renewed, inspired, and still rewriting history — Lionel Messi remains the face of the MLS and the favorite to lift yet another individual trophy. The king is not done yet.
