Lionel Messi’s Most Personal Confession After Saying Goodbye to Argentina
Leo opened up after closing his chapter with the Albiceleste and admitted he still struggles to fully grasp everything he achieved over more than two decades.
Lionel Messi has closed his chapter with Argentina, but the emotions from his farewell are still unfolding. A video released by Adidas showed previously unseen footage from his final moments in the Albiceleste shirt and revealed a much more personal side of the legend, far removed from the goals, records and trophies.
Asked what he would tell the younger version of himself, Messi kept it simple: “Enjoy it. Enjoy things more.” Then came an even deeper reflection: “In fact, I don’t know if I’m even aware yet of everything I achieved in football.”
The line says a lot about a career lived almost entirely at full speed. Between the pressure, the trophies and the constant demand to compete, Messi now admits he may not always have had the chance to stop and truly take in the scale of what he accomplished.
More than 20 years representing Argentina
Messi’s relationship with the Argentina national team went through every possible emotion. There were painful defeats, heavy criticism and lost finals, along with years when the biggest prize with his country seemed determined to stay out of reach. Through it all, he kept answering the call.
“I enjoyed coming here. I did it for more than 20 years and it’s not easy to leave,” he admitted. His farewell comes after a period in which he completely transformed his story with the national team and built a bond with Argentine supporters that once seemed far more complicated.
“Wearing this shirt is above everything else”
Messi reflected on experiencing both sides of football with Argentina. “I had to lose, I had to win,” he said, before summing up what representing his country meant to him: “Wearing this shirt is above everything else, and I always tried to defend it with my soul.”
That journey ran alongside nearly his entire club career, from the years in which he became a legend at Barcelona to his current spell with Inter Miami. The clubs changed, but Argentina remained a constant for more than two decades.
One final goodbye at the Monumental
The ending came on a stage that felt written for the occasion. Messi played his final match for Argentina at the Estadio Monumental, in front of more than 85,000 supporters and against Benin, on a night that ended with a 3-0 victory.
At 39, Messi leaves the Albiceleste after 208 appearances and 126 goals, though not football altogether. He will keep playing for as long as his body and desire allow, but one enormous chapter of his story is now complete. And perhaps only now, with the chance to finally look back, is he beginning to understand everything he lived through.
