Lionel Messi and Inter Miami to Kick Off Historic 2027 MLS Season
Lionel Messi and Inter Miami will take center stage as Major League Soccer launches a historic new season. The league has unveiled a special 14-game campaign that will change the way its championship is decided.
Lionel Messi will be at the center of another historic moment in American soccer. Major League Soccer (MLS) has announced that Inter Miami will host the opening match of its unprecedented 2027 Sprint Season, a shortened campaign that marks a major turning point for the league.
The Herons will welcome FC Cincinnati on Friday, February 19, 2027, at 8:00 p.m. ET at Nu Stadium in Miami. The match will be the league's only Friday fixture, with the remaining 28 teams beginning their campaigns on Saturday and Sunday.
But this will be no ordinary MLS season. Every team will play just 14 regular-season matches, with the campaign wrapping up on May 8 before a condensed playoff tournament crowns the 2027 MLS Cup champion.
Why Is the 2027 MLS Season So Short?
The 2027 MLS Sprint Season is a transitional competition designed to prepare the league for its biggest scheduling change in decades. Beginning in July 2027, MLS will switch to a summer-to-spring calendar, moving away from its traditional February-to-December format.
Under the new system, each club will face its 14 conference opponents once, playing seven matches at home and seven on the road. For Messi and Inter Miami, that means every result will carry added weight, with far less room for mistakes in the race for a playoff spot.
Despite its shorter format, the competition will crown an official MLS Cup champion. The season will also help determine qualification for the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup and Leagues Cup, giving teams plenty to play for beyond the title itself.

Inter Miami's Road Through the Sprint Season
After opening against FC Cincinnati, Messi's side will face familiar Eastern Conference rivals, including Atlanta United, New York City FC, Nashville SC, Orlando City and Philadelphia Union.
Among the standout fixtures is a Florida rivalry clash against Orlando City on April 17, while Inter Miami will host CF Montréal on May 1 in one of their final home games of the shortened campaign.
The Herons will close out the regular season on May 8 with an away match against Toronto FC, a potentially decisive fixture as teams battle for postseason qualification.
When Will the 2027 MLS Cup Final Take Place?
The regular season will conclude with Decision Day on May 8, when playoff positions will be finalized across both conferences.
The top eight teams from each conference will advance to a single-elimination postseason, replacing the usual extended playoff format for this special campaign. The Eastern and Western Conference winners will then meet in the 2027 MLS Cup final over Memorial Day weekend in late May.
MLS has yet to announce the exact date and kickoff time for the championship match.
Before turning their attention to this historic new chapter, Messi and Inter Miami still have the 2026 MLS season to finish, with the upcoming playoffs set to determine who enters the transition year as defending champions.
