Lionel Messi and Inter Miami Face a Do-or-Die Battle Against Nashville for a Spot in the Semifinals
Inter Miami have reached that point in the season where there is no emotional cushion left. After a series that began with authority but suddenly opened up again, the Herons find themselves in a situation they know all too well: a win-or-go-home Game 3. It’s not the ideal scenario for a team that dreams of competing at the level of the MLS heavyweights — but it’s the reality they must now turn into opportunity.
The Ghost of Last Year Returns
History is not helping. In 2024, after a record-breaking regular season in which Miami won the Supporters’ Shield and shattered the league’s points record, the team also got pushed into a decisive third match… and were eliminated by Atlanta United. That wound has not fully healed.
Now, in 2025, the opponent is different but the tension feels identical. After a 3–1 win in Game 1 and a 2–1 loss at Geodis Park in Game 2, everything will be decided this Saturday, November 8, at Chase Stadium. It’s a cruel déjà vu — one Inter Miami simply cannot afford to relive.
Meanwhile, other contenders have taken the short road. Vancouver Whitecaps, powered by Thomas Müller, and LAFC, led by Heung-Min Son, advanced comfortably. Miami, once again, must swim against the current.
Messi and His Core Group Face a Team Built to Disrupt
If Inter Miami want to survive, they will need total versions of their leaders. Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and Rodrigo De Paul form the competitive backbone of the project — but they must raise their level to break down a Nashville SC side that has already shown it won’t be intimidated.
Coach B.J. Callaghan relies on a disciplined structure and key performers such as Hany Mukhtar, Sam Surridge, Jacob Shaffelburg, and Andy Najar. They’re players who don’t need to dominate to hurt you. All it takes is one mistake, one open lane, one bad defensive transition — and they can slice you apart.
For Miami, emotional control and surgical precision will be essential. In the MLS playoffs, there are no second chances.

What’s Next If Miami Advance?
Should Inter Miami knock out Nashville, their next step will be a matchup against the winner of FC Cincinnati vs. Columbus Crew in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Elsewhere, the 2025 Supporters’ Shield belongs to Philadelphia Union, who advanced without difficulty and now await the winner between Charlotte FC and New York City FC.
The stage is set. Miami have the home field, star power and media weight. Nashville have structure, discipline and zero fear.
The failure from last year is still there, breathing down their necks.
The question is simple — and brutal:
Will this time be any different?
