Inter Miami confirm shock Mascherano resignation
After guiding Inter Miami to MLS Cup glory last year, Javier Mascherano has stepped down as head coach due to personal reasons.
Javier Mascherano has resigned from his role as Inter Miami head coach for personal reasons.
The 41-year-old took on the role in November 2024, winning 27 of his 47 games in MLS (D11 L9) while guiding the Herons to MLS Cup glory in 2025.
Miami scored 101 goals under Mascherano last season, the most in a single MLS campaign, a tally which also includes a record 20 in the play-offs.
Lionel Messi, who played alongside Mascherano at Barcelona, finished the 2025 regular season with 48 goal contributions (29 goals, 19 assists), the second most in a single campaign in MLS history, one behind Carlos Vela (49 in 2019).
Mascherano also led Miami to the knockout rounds of the Club World Cup. They defeated Porto in the group stage before losing to Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16.
"I want to let everyone know that, for personal reasons, I have decided to end my tenure as head coach of Inter Miami CF," said Mascherano.
"First and foremost, I would like to thank the club for the trust they placed in me, every employee who is part of the organisation for the collective effort, but especially the players, who made it possible for us to experience unforgettable moments.
"I also want to thank the fans and La Familia, because none of this would have been possible without them.
"I will always carry with me the memory of our first star, and wherever I am, I will continue to wish the club all the best moving forward. I have no doubt that the club will continue to achieve success in the future."
Miami are third in the Eastern Conference, with 12 points from their opening seven games.
Guillermo Hoyos will assume the role of first-team head coach for the time being. Miami take on the Colorado Rapids on Saturday.
